Bishop Emeritus Munib Younan from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land received the Pacem in Terris Peace and Freedom Award on 24 September from the Roman Catholic Church for his interreligious peace-building efforts.

Der in Nazareth (Galiläa) geborene Pastor Dr. Saïd Ailabouni ist mit 19 Jahren in die USA gegangen, um Arzt zu werden. Weil er aber so wütend auf Gott war, hat er stattdessen Theologie studiert und ist lutherischer Pastor geworden. Heute leitet er die für Europa und den Nahen Osten zuständige Abteilung der Evangelisch-Lutherischen Kirche in Amerika. Seine Familie in Palästina hat er seit seiner Auswanderung vor 50 Jahren aber immer regelmäßig besucht. Im Vorfeld der Weltweiten Aktionswoche für Frieden in Palästina und Israel hat sich Ailabouni bereit erklärt, dem Ökumenischen Rat der Kirchen etwas über die Erfahrungen und Beobachtungen zu erzählen, die er im Laufe seines Lebens gemacht hat.

Born in Nazareth, Galilee, Rev. Dr Saïd Ailabouni moved to the US at the age of 19 to become a physician. But he was so angry at God that he went to study theology instead, becoming a Lutheran pastor. Now he is leading the Middle East & Europe desk of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Since leaving his hometown 50 years ago, he visits his Palestinian family regularly. As the World Week for Peace in Palestine and Israel approaches, Ailabouni agreed to share some of his lifetime observations with the Word Council of Churches.

Der Ökumenische Rat der Kirchen (ÖRK) und das Internationale Jüdische Komitee für interreligiöse Konsultationen (IJCIC) sind vom 25. bis 27. Juni zu einem offiziellen Treffen in Paris zusammengekommen, das unter dem Thema „The normalization of hatred: challenges for Jews and Christians today“ (Die Normalisierung von Hass: Herausforderungen für jüdische und christliche Gläubige heute) stand. Das Treffen fand zu einer Zeit statt, die geprägt ist von großen Herausforderungen für das öffentliche und religiöse Leben von vielen Gesellschaftsgruppen in aller Welt. Peter Prove, der Direktor der ÖRK-Kommission der Kirchen für internationale Angelegenheiten, hat auf dem Treffen die Antisemitismus-Grundsätze des ÖRK präsentiert und über das Engagement des ÖRK für die Menschenrechte aller berichtet. The World Council of Churches (WCC) and the International Jewish Committee for Interreligious Consultations (IJCIC) met formally on 25-27 June in Paris, under the theme “The normalization of hatred: challenges for Jews and Christians today”. This meeting took place at a time of significant challenges in public and religious life for many communities around the world. At the meeting Peter Prove, director of the WCC Commission of the Churches on International Affairs, presented the WCC policies on antisemitism and the WCC’s work for human rights for all. The WCC News met with him after the meeting.

A little more than a year ago Rev. Stacey Duensing went on a trip to Israel-Palestine together with her denomination, the Reformed Church in America. She returned home to the United States with a different perspective of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. A perspective she wanted to share with a broader public audience.

Dr Olav Fykse Tveit address topics of misinterpretation of religious text, the culture of peace in religion, and global peace and how it is affected by poverty, illness and exploitation.

The WCC is committed to a just peace in Palestine and Israel with a view that this conflict is about justice with deep moral dimensions that must be given proper weight by all if we are to reach a lasting solution.
