New book available: “Ahead of Her Time: Pan-African Women of Faith and the Vision of Christian Unity, Mission, and Justice”

A new book, "Ahead of Her Time: Pan-African Women of Faith and the Vision of Christian Unity, Mission, and Justice,” authored by World Council of Churches (WCC) president from North America Rev. Dr Angelique Walker-Smith, debuted on 1 November, All Saints Day, during an online and in-person reception and awards ceremony of pan-African women of faith represented in the book. The event took place at Bread for the World (USA) in Washington, DC.

Ahead of Her Time

Pan-African Women of Faith and the Vision of Christian Unity, Mission, and Justice

The author shares the untold stories of several pan-African women of faith from Africa, North America, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe who provided local, national, and global ecumenical leadership during formative periods of the modern-day ecumenical movement.

In addition to the author’s personal experiences with these women, the publication offers an important rewriting of the ecumenical narrative from a pan-African Women’s lens. It is hoped that the publication will strengthen the ecumenical agenda of a more inclusive community that embraces the objectives of the pilgrimage of justice and peace as it embraces the experience of these women who have historically been marginalized and affected by racism and gender discrimination.

“הם רוצים לחיות ללא פחד והטרדה תמידית”

מייר ני מיבחריק, מגולווי , אירלנד, שימשה כמלווה אקומנית בכפר טובאס, בגדה המערבית, מתאריך ה-31 באוגוסט עד לתאריך ה-7 באוקטובר. היא גם שימשה כמלווה אקומנית בחברון, בשנת 2019. תוכנית הליווי האקומני בפלסטין וישראל של מועצת הכנסיות העולמית (WCC), המבוססת על קריאה של ראשי כנסיות מקומיים ליצור נוכחות בינלאומית במדינה, מלווה את האנשים והקהילות המקומיות, כאשר היא מציעה נוכחות מגנה ועדות למאמצים והתקוות היומיומיים של אנשים אלו. למטה, ני מיבחריק מדברת על הדברים להם הייתה עדה בשטח.

“Quieren vivir sin miedo ni acoso constante”

Máire Ní Mheibhric, de Galway (Irlanda), ejerció de acompañante ecuménica en el pueblo de Tubas, en la Ribera Occidental, entre el 31 de agosto y el 7 de octubre. También había sido acompañante ecuménica en 2019 en Hebrón. El Programa Ecuménico de Acompañamiento en Palestina e Israel del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI) –creado a raíz del llamado de los dirigentes de las iglesias locales al establecimiento de una presencia internacional en el país– acompaña a las poblaciones y comunidades locales ofreciéndoles su presencia protectora y siendo testigos tanto de sus dificultades cotidianas como de sus esperanzas. Bajo estas líneas, Ní Mheibhric reflexiona sobre lo que vio durante esas semanas como acompañante.

„Die Menschen wollen ohne Angst und ständige Übergriffe leben“

Máire Ní Mheibhric aus Galway, Irland, war vom 31. August bis zum 7. Oktober als ökumenische Begleitperson in dem Dorf Tubas im Westjordanland im Einsatz. Bereits 2019 war sie in Hebron als ökumenische Begleiterin tätig. Das ökumenische Begleitprogramm in Palästina und Israel des Ökumenischen Rates der Kirchen (ÖRK) wurde nach einem Appell örtlicher Kirchenleitender ins Leben gerufen, die sich für eine internationale Präsenz im Land eingesetzt haben. Die Begleitpersonen unterstützen die lokale Bevölkerung und die Gemeinschaften, übernehmen durch ihre Präsenz eine Schutzfunktion und werden unmittelbar Zeuge der täglichen Kämpfe und Hoffnungen der dort lebenden Menschen. Ní Mheibhric beschreibt hier, was sie während ihres Einsatzes erlebt hat.

«La population veut vivre sans crainte et sans harcèlement permanent»

Máire Ní Mheibhric est originaire de Galway, en Irlande. Du 31 août au 7 octobre derniers, elle était accompagnatrice œcuménique (AO) à Tubas, un village de Cisjordanie. Elle avait déjà été AO en 2019 à Hébron. Le Programme œcuménique d’accompagnement en Palestine et en Israël (EAPPI) a été créé par le Conseil œcuménique des Églises (COE) à la demande des responsables des Églises locales, qui réclamaient la mise en place d’une présence internationale dans leur pays. Ce programme accompagne les populations et les communautés locales en assurant une présence protectrice et en témoignant de leurs luttes et espérances quotidiennes. Máire Ní Mheibhric revient ci-dessous sur ce qu’elle a observé sur le terrain.
