When Rekiatu Musa Jingi, an investigative journalist and human rights advocate in Cameroon, shares her learnings about reporting on migrants, she’s speaking from both her heart and her mind: “I learned how to get and how to conduct great interviews and how to take good pictures and videos without victimizing anybody.”

In short, she added, “Words matter.”

A roundtable hosted by the World Council of Churches and the World Association for Christian Communication released a message on 8 March that addresses the role of media in a world striving for gender equality.

The fruits of a September symposium on “Communication for Social Justice in a Digital Age” are being shared globally—with an invitation to contribute to an action plan for steps on the way to digital justice.

En un proyecto de manifiesto sobre la comunicación para la justicia social en la era digital, los participantes en un simposio internacional sobre la justicia digital ofrecen conjuntamente su visión sobre el contexto mundial actual. Asimismo, presentan un análisis de las cuestiones y los desafíos planteados, los principios para promover una comunicación socialmente justa y un llamado a impulsar un “movimiento transformador” basado en los derechos humanos, la dignidad de las personas y los valores democráticos.

Hacia el final del simposio sobre justicia digital, el 15 de septiembre, los participantes sopesaron su visión del futuro en un panorama lleno de injusticias. Todos los que participaron en el simposio – teólogos, líderes eclesiásticos, políticos, estudiantes, periodistas o comunicadores profesionales – son, en efecto, “comunicadores digitales”. Este diverso conjunto de personas interesadas trabajó para transformar sus pensamientos colectivos en recomendaciones que creen que pueden ayudar al mundo.

In a draft “Manifesto for Communication for Social Justice in a Digital Age,” participants at an international symposium on digital justice collectively offer a view of the current global context, a look at issues and challenges, principles to promote socially just communication and a call for a “transformative movement” founded on human rights, human dignity, and democratic principles.

As a symposium on digital justice drew to a close on 15 September, participants  were weighing their vision for the future in a landscape fraught with injustice. Those taking part in the symposium—be they theologians, church leaders, politicians, students, journalists or professional communicators—are all in fact, “digital communicators,” and this broad array of people who care worked to hone their collective thoughts into recommendations they believe can help the world.
