We, the members of communities including social thinkers, clergy, theologians, activists, and community leaders representing social organizations, ecumenical institutions, and religious traditions, gathered under the aegis of the New International Financial Economic Architecture (NIFEA). We met at a time when leaders of the G20 were also gathering to deliberate on the future of this planet.

In a letter to G20 leaders, global religious leaders representing half a billion Christians in over 100 countries warned that rising global temperatures will have increasingly disastrous consequences on impoverished and vulnerable communities that contribute least to the climate crisis.

More than a year since the World Health Organisation declared it a pandemic, COVID-19 is still raging, particularly in the developing world where hundreds of thousands of lives have been lost and tens of millions more forced into destitution. The current situation continues to require strong social protection measures in all countries to ensure that the poor and vulnerable are able to weather the crisis’ unprecedented health and economic consequences.

In a letter to leaders of the Group of Twenty (G20) on 17 November 2020, the World Council of Churches, World Communion of Reformed Churches, Lutheran World Federation and Council for World Mission urged easing of pressure on countries being suffocated by debt especially in a time of pandemic. The organizations represent more than 500 million Christians across the world.

Interfaith Message on Just Finance, Debt and Reparations

In a joint message released on 15 May 2020, the World Council of Churches, World Communion of Reformed Churches, Lutheran World Federation, and Council for World Mission underlined that cooperation and solidarity within and across countries, embodied in networks of faith communities, civil society, and social movements as well as fresh systems of global governance rooted in justice, care, and sustainability are needed in response to the global health crisis of the Covid‐19 pandemic and the longer‐standing economic and ecological emergency.

The current Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted every aspect of our lives in a world already plagued with immense human suffering. In response, our organizations – the World Council of Churches (WCC), the World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC), the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), and the Council for World Mission (CWM) – through the joint New International Financial and Economic Architecture (NIFEA) initiative convened an e-conference under the theme, “Economy of Life in a time of Pandemic”, on 17 and 24 April 2020.

En respuesta a esta situación, nuestras organizaciones (el Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI), la Comunión Mundial de Iglesias Reformadas (CMIR), la Federación Luterana Mundial (FLM) y el Consejo de Misión Mundial (CMM)) convocaron una conferencia electrónica bajo el tema “Economía de la vida en tiempos de pandemia” los días 17 y 24 de abril de 2020, mediante la iniciativa conjunta de Nueva Arquitectura Financiera y Económica Internacional (NIFEA, por su sigla en inglés).

The report points out that underlying these disturbing trends are “production and consumption patterns, human population dynamics and trends, trade, technological innovations and local through global governance.”
In every single area of recommended action, churches are well-placed to make significant contributions. We have the capacity and the responsibility to act.
