WCC institute encouraged rethinking theology

The second-ever Regional Ecumenical Theological Institute, jointly organized by the All Africa Conference of Churches and the World Council of Churches (WCC) Ecumenical Theological Education programme, was held 7-16 November in Abuja, Nigeria, drawing about 50 young people from all over Africa.

Right Rev. Dr Emily Onyango, assistant bishop, Anglican Diocese of Bondo, Kenya, was ordained in 1987—the second woman priest ordained in all of east Africa—and appointed as assistant bishop in 2021. She also serves as a lecturer for St Pauls University. Below, she reflects on her path to becoming a church leader, the resistance she encountered, and her message to young people today.

Lorsque le pasteur Frank Chikane était secrétaire général du Conseil des Églises d'Afrique du Sud pour dénoncer les injustices du régime de l'apartheid, son travail s’est poursuivi même après la démolition du bâtiment abritant les bureaux du Conseil dans les années 1980 suite à une bombe. Modérateur de la Commission des Églises pour les affaires internationales du Conseil œcuménique des Églises (COE) depuis 2016, le pasteur Frank Chikane s'est engagé dans la lutte contre les injustices dans de nombreuses régions. Le département de communication du COE a demandé au pasteur Frank Chikane de revenir sur son mandat à la commission et sur l'appel permanent des églises à s'attaquer aux injustices dans le monde d'aujourd'hui.

Rev. Frank Chikane: “You can’t do unity at the expense of justice”

When Rev. Frank Chikane was leading the South African Council of Churches in calling out injustices of the apartheid system, their work did not stop even after the council’s office building was bombed to the ground in 1980s. Moderating the Commission of the Churches on International Affairs of the World Council of Churches (WCC) since 2016, Rev. Chikane has been engaged in addressing injustices in many parts of the world. WCC Communication asked Rev. Chikane to look back at his term at the commission and the ongoing calling of churches to address injustices in the world today.

Violence against girls and women: the unanimous ”no“ of girls and women of the churches of Benin

Improving awareness among girls and women on violence, transformative masculinities and femininities, HIV in the COVID-19 context: in order to achieve this very important objective, the World Council of Churches (WCC) Ecumenical HIV and AIDS Initiatives and Advocacy, in collaboration with the non-governmental organization Déborah and the Bible Society of Benin, held an intergenerational workshop for 25 girls and women from the Protestant Methodist Church of Benin, the Assemblies of God Church of Benin, Pentecostal churches and non-governmental organisations. The workshop took place at the Bible Society of Cotonou.

Depuis sa création en 2016, le Centre international pour la paix et l’harmonie interreligieuses (International Centre for Inter-Faith Peace and Harmony – ICIPH) de Kaduna, au Nigeria, a constitué un cadre d'artisans de la paix, témoins de la paix et de l'harmonie interreligieuses. Il reste un symbole physique pour aider les musulmans et les chrétiens à travailler ensemble plus efficacement.

More than 140 people met online in a spontaneous Gathering in Grief” to mourn Rev. Phumzile Mabizela, who passed away the morning of on 5 July. Mabizela was the executive director of INERELA+ (the International Network of Religious Leaders Living with or Personally Affected by HIV), co-moderator of the World Council of Churches (WCC) Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance HIV Campaign Strategy Group and a member of the International Reference Group of WCC Ecumenical HIV and AIDS Initiatives and Advocacy.
