Christians in New York City opened the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity on 18 January by participating in a worship service at the Interchurch Center, an office building that houses many church-related organizations and many others focused on intercultural and religious exchange. The service was infused with themes of justice and unity, both from a perspective of African-American history and the urging of Christians today to put their faith into action.

لا تملك سامية* البالغة من العمر ستة وعشرين عاما بطاقة هوية، لا فلسطينية ولا إسرائيلية. ولدت في الضفة الغربية، وكانت ذات مرة تملك بطاقة هوية من القدس عن طريق أبيها، ولكنها أُلغيت.  اكتشفت عن إلغاء بطاقتها عندما كانت في السادسة عشر من عمرها، واعتقدت أن لديها فرصة للسفر مع مدرستها إلى سويسرا. لكنها لم تتمكن من السفر. ومنذ ذلك الحين، تكافح سامية وعائلتها لاستعادة بطاقة هوية القدس الخاصة بها.

לסמיה* בת העשרים ושש שנולדה בגדה המערבית אין תעודת זהות – לא פלסטינית ולא ישראלית. הייתה לה פעם תעודת זהות ירושלמית בזכות אביה, אבל היא בוטלה. על הביטול נודע לה כשהייתה בת 16 וחשבה שיש לה הזדמנות לנסוע לשווייץ עם בית הספר שבו למדה. היא לא יכלה לנסוע. מאז, סמיה ומשפחתה נאבקות לקבל חזרה את תעודת הזהות הירושלמית שלה.

Samyah*, de 26 años, no tiene documento de identidad, ni palestino ni israelí. Nacida en Cisjordania, en el pasado tuvo un documento de identidad de Jerusalén, por su padre, pero se lo retiraron. Se enteró de que se lo habían retirado con 16 años, cuando tuvo la oportunidad de viajar con su colegio a Suiza, pero no pudo por este motivo. Desde entonces, Samyah y su familia luchan por recuperar su documento de identidad de Jerusalén.

Die 26 Jahre alte Samyah* hat keinen Personalausweis – weder einen israelischen noch einen palästinensischen. Geboren im Westjordanland, hatte sie früher einen Jerusalemer Ausweis, weil ihr Vater dort lebte. Diese ID-Karte wurde ihr jedoch entzogen. Dass sie das Recht auf diese ID-Karte verloren hatte, erfuhr sie erst mit 16, als sie dachte, sie hätte die Möglichkeit, mit ihrer Schule in die Schweiz zu reisen. So konnte sie an dieser Klassenfahrt nicht teilnehmen. Seither kämpfen Samyah und ihre Familie darum, den Jerusalemer Ausweis wiederzuerlangen.

La jeune Samyah*, âgée de 26 ans, n’a pas de carte d’identité palestinienne ni israélienne. Née en Cisjordanie, elle détenait une carte d’identité de Jérusalem du nom de son père qui a été révoquée. Elle a appris la révocation à l’âge de 16 ans, alors qu’elle pensait pouvoir partir en voyage scolaire en Suisse. Ce ne fut pas le cas. Depuis, Samyah et sa famille luttent pour qu’elle obtienne une nouvelle carte d’identité de Jérusalem.

Twenty-six-year-old Samyah* has no ID card—not Palestinian or Israeli. Born in the West Bank, she once had a Jerusalem ID card after her father but it was revoked. She found out about the revocation when she was 16 and thought had the opportunity to travel with her school to Switzerland. She could not travel. Since then, Samyah and her family have been struggling to regain her Jerusalem ID card.
