The first regional prayer, focusing on the Middle East, will be shared 12 March, with other regions following each day. On 20 March, a global prayer will culminate the series.
UN International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is held on the anniversary of the day police in Sharpeville, South Africa, opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid in 1960.
The upcoming week of daily regional prayers on racism were crafted with inputs from members of the recently formed WCC Reference Group on Overcoming Violence as well as WCC staff from the respective regions.
The prayers are an invitation to stand in prayerful solidarity with one another across regions, and condemn all manifestations of racial injustice.
