Rev. Fr Dr Lawrence Iwuamadi is dean of the Ecumenical Institute, the graduate school which opened its academic year this week. Below, Iwuamadi reflects on the arrival of new students at the Ecumenical Institute during this remarkable time.

The Romani people, also known as the Roma, migrated from northwest India 1,500 years ago. Once they arrived in Europe, they spread across the continent from the Balkan region. Now Romani live worldwide, though principally in Europe.

At a time of increased divisions within churches and within rapidly changing societies, Christians are called, more urgently than ever before, to model the values of reconciliation, justice and peace. That’s why a group of theologians and church leaders from different denominations have been meeting near the German city of Augsburg to work together on two documents calling for much closer collaboration in the tasks of peace-building and the care of migrants and refugees.

“Christ’s call for abundant life (John 10:10) means that the church must work to address the enormity of challenges, including access to water resources, care for creation, and adequate health care,” said Rev. Matthew Ross during a World Council of Churches (WCC) seminar on young people’s involvement in “Ecumenical Diakonia and Sustainable Development,” held in Matanzas, Cuba, July 15-20.

August hat sich die Kommission für Jugend in der ökumenischen Bewegung (ECHOS) des Ökumenischen Rates der Kirchen (ÖRK) in Sibiu, Rumänien getroffen, um Einsichten und Erkenntnisse über die Position und die Rolle der Jugend in der heutigen ökumenischen Bewegung zu gewinnen und Orientierung für die Zukunft der Kommission auf ihrem Pilgerweg der Gerechtigkeit und des Friedens zu finden.

Gathering in Sibiu, Romania, the World Council of Churches (WCC) youth commission ECHOS met on 17-20 August for days of discernment on the position and role of youth in the ecumenical movement today, and to set the future path of the commission, as it journeys on the Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace.

Reunida en Sibiu (Rumania) del 17 al 20 de agosto, la Comisión de los jóvenes en el movimiento ecuménico (ECHOS) del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI) realizó unas jornadas de discernimiento sobre la posición y el papel de la juventud en el movimiento ecuménico actual y estableció el camino futuro de la Comisión en su peregrinación de justicia y paz.

La Commission des jeunes du Conseil œcuménique des Églises (COE), Echos, s’est réunie du 17 au 20 août à Sibiu, en Roumanie, pour réfléchir à la place et au rôle de la jeunesse dans le mouvement œcuménique à l’heure actuelle, ainsi que pour définir la voie que devra emprunter la commission à l’avenir dans son pèlerinage de justice et de paix.
