Youth participants lead a moment of prayer, through a dramatic choreography inviting gestures in interaction between the youth and other participants. Hundreds of people gather from across the world for an ecumenical prayer service at the Nieuwe Kerk, a 15th-century church in Amsterdam, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the World Council of Churches at the very spot in which the organization was founded.

Christians worldwide gather in prayer for unity— even if distanced

Even as nations continue to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, final preparations are under way for one of the world’s largest annual prayer observances, traditionally celebrated 18-25 January. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity involves Christian communities from many traditions and all parts of the globe. At a time when public health concerns put a limit on physical gatherings, it provides an opportunity for churches to come together by means of a typically Christian practice that long predates modern transport: prayer.

Auch wenn die Länder der Welt weiterhin mit der COVID-19-Pandemie ringen, laufen die letzten Vorbereitungen für eine der größten Gebetsinitiativen der Welt, die jedes Jahr traditionell vom 18. bis 25. Januar veranstaltet wird. An der Gebetswoche für die Einheit der Christen nehmen zahlreiche christliche Glaubensgemeinschaften ganz unterschiedlicher Traditionen und aus allen Regionen der Welt teil. Zu einem Zeitpunkt, an dem aufgrund der Sorge um die öffentliche Gesundheit starke Einschränkungen für persönliche Zusammenkünfte von Menschen gelten, bietet die Gebetswoche für die Einheit der Christen den Kirchen eine Gelegenheit, mittels eines typischen christlichen Brauchs zusammenzukommen, der schon lange vor den modernen Transportmöglichkeiten praktiziert wurde: das Gebet.
