Ukraine: Auf humanitäre Bedürfnisse reagieren

Als am 24. Februar 2022 die russische Großinvasion der Ukraine begann, hatten die Kirchen bereits acht Jahre lang seit der Annexion der Krim im Jahr 2014 humanitäre Hilfe im Land geleistet. Die Arbeit, die die Kirchen durchführen, um die Bedürfnisse von Kriegsvertriebenen zu erfüllen, ist nicht neu, der Umfang hingegen ist enorm, denn in den sechs Monaten seit Beginn der Invasion wurden 14 Millionen Menschen vertrieben.

Ukraine: Responding to humanitarian need

When the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, churches had already been responding to humanitarian need in the country for eight years, since the annexation of Crimea in 2014.  The work being undertaken by churches in meeting the needs of those displaced by the war is not new, but the scale is staggering as 14 million people have been displaced in the six months since the invasion began.

My name is Tobias Nissen, I am an 18-year-old UK / Danish dual national who has lived in France my whole life. I attended school in Geneva, Switzerland and during my final years of education, I wrote an essay about the effects that climate change is having on low-lying Pacific countries. From this point on my interest in the Pacific region grew, and when I received the opportunity to work as an intern for the Pacific Conference of Churches, in Fiji for 2 months, I knew that it would be an experience that I couldn’t miss.

Der Ökumenische Rat der Kirchen (ÖRK) hat seit dem ersten Tag des Krieges in der Ukraine und auch schon in den Monaten davor ernsthaft für den Frieden in diesem Konflikt und überall auf der Welt gearbeitet und gebetet. Von Anfang an hat der ÖRK ein sofortiges Ende der bewaffneten Auseinandersetzungen zur Beendigung des Krieges und ebenfalls einen sofortigen Stopp wahlloser und eskalierender Angriffe auf die Zivilbevölkerung in der Ukraine gefordert. Fr Ioan Sauca: “God is on the side of those who are suffering”

The World Council of Churches (WCC) has, since the first day of the war in Ukraine and even in the months before, been working and praying earnestly for peace in this conflict and throughout the world. From the beginning, the WCC has called for an immediate end to armed hostilities, to stop the war and has appealed also for an immediate end to indiscriminate attacks with an escalating impact on civilians in Ukraine. The Pacific islands are in grave danger and at the frontline of global climate change, so that is why the United Nations Conference on Climate Change, known as COP26, in Glasgow is so important for islanders, says Rev. James Bhagwan. He is general secretary of the Pacific Conference of Churches, a Methodist minister based in Fiji, and visited Geneva on his way to COP26, in Scotland's biggest city, Glasgow, from 31 October to 12 November.
