The World Council of Churches (WCC) is mourning the passing of Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, president of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue (PCID).

“He was held in great respect by interreligious partners for his capacity to build bridges of understanding and mutual respect with people of different faiths,” said WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit. “He was committed to the mutual flourishing of all through peaceful coexistence and actively sought to cultivate a culture of peace by uprooting violence and hatred and promoting harmony and trust.”

Tveit expressed appreciation for Cardinal Tauran’s leadership in strengthening the relationship between the PCID and the WCC. “He leaves behind a rich legacy of achievements which will be treasured in the years to come.”, said Tveit. “His was truly a life of courage, compassion and commitment.”
