Rev. Frank Chikane: “No es posible crear unidad en detrimento de la justicia”

Mientras el Rev. Frank Chikane dirigió el Consejo Sudafricano de Iglesias (SACC, por sus siglas en inglés) en su denuncia de las injusticias del sistema del apartheid, la organización no cejó en sus esfuerzos, ni siquiera después del atentado que redujo su sede a escombros en los años ochenta. Moderador de la Comisión de las Iglesias para Asuntos Internacionales (CIAI) del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI) desde 2016, el Rev. Chikane ha denunciado injusticias en múltiples lugares del mundo. El departamento de comunicación del CMI le pidió que volviera la vista atrás sobre su mandato en la CIAI y sobre el constante llamado de las iglesias a poner fin a las injusticias que afectan hoy al mundo.

Le pasteur Frank Chikane : "On ne peut pas faire l'unité au détriment de la justice".

Lorsque le pasteur Frank Chikane était secrétaire général du Conseil des Églises d'Afrique du Sud pour dénoncer les injustices du régime de l'apartheid, son travail s’est poursuivi même après la démolition du bâtiment abritant les bureaux du Conseil dans les années 1980 suite à une bombe. Modérateur de la Commission des Églises pour les affaires internationales du Conseil œcuménique des Églises (COE) depuis 2016, le pasteur Frank Chikane s'est engagé dans la lutte contre les injustices dans de nombreuses régions. Le département de communication du COE a demandé au pasteur Frank Chikane de revenir sur son mandat à la commission et sur l'appel permanent des églises à s'attaquer aux injustices dans le monde d'aujourd'hui.

Rev. Frank Chikane: “You can’t do unity at the expense of justice”

When Rev. Frank Chikane was leading the South African Council of Churches in calling out injustices of the apartheid system, their work did not stop even after the council’s office building was bombed to the ground in 1980s. Moderating the Commission of the Churches on International Affairs of the World Council of Churches (WCC) since 2016, Rev. Chikane has been engaged in addressing injustices in many parts of the world. WCC Communication asked Rev. Chikane to look back at his term at the commission and the ongoing calling of churches to address injustices in the world today.

Remembering Patrick Matsinkinyiri (27 July 1937 – 15 January 2021)

Patrick Matsikenyiri was born in Biriri, Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), and died in Mutare, Zimbabwe near his home village a few kilometers from the border of Mozambique, as a result of complications due to the COVID-19 virus. His career included virtually all aspects of church music — singing, choral directing, composition, hymnal editor, festival leader, professor, and enlivener of global songs in venues around the world.

WCC seminar in Mozambique shows vital role of diakonia

The last of three capacity-building seminars on Human Resources and Church Leadership for Diakonia and Development took place in Maputo, Mozambique, 18-20 June. This most recent seminar was for Portuguese speakers in Africa, with participants coming mainly from Angola and Mozambique. The first two seminars - for French and English speakers respectively - were held in May in Cotonou, Bénin, and Nairobi, Kenya.

Churches call for support amid devastation caused by Cyclone Idai

More than 100,000 people are still stranded from massive flooding caused by a devastating cyclone and heavy rainfall in Mozambique and neighbouring southeastern African countries. As the numbers of victims and people displaced are still unfolding, churches in the region are calling everyone to join in prayers for the wellbeing and protection of those affected.

Más de 100 000 personas se encuentran aún atrapadas por las inundaciones masivas causadas por un devastador ciclón y lluvias de extrema intensidad en Mozambique y en sus países vecinos del sureste de África. Con las cifras de las víctimas y de las personas desplazadas aún por definir, las iglesias de la región están pidiendo a todos que se unan para orar por el bienestar y la protección de los afectados.

Les Églises lancent un appel au soutien face à la dévastation causée par le cyclone Idai

Plus de 100 000 personnes sont toujours bloquées par les inondations généralisées provoquées par un cyclone destructeur et d’abondantes précipitations au Mozambique et dans les pays voisins d’Afrique du Sud-Est. Alors que le nombre de victimes et de personnes déplacées ne cesse d’augmenter, les Églises de la région en appellent à chacun et chacune à s’unir dans la prière pour le bien-être et la protection des personnes touchées.

Ecumenical groups join in UN forum on business and human rights in Geneva

The huge impacts of businesses on the communities in which they operate often bring benefits, but companies can disregard and even harm people’s rights in pursuit of economic gain. The WCC, ACT Alliance and the Lutheran World Federation hosted a side event at the 6th United Nations Forum on Business and Human Rights in Geneva on 28 November, in this context.
