Metropolitan Vasilios reflects on peace process in Cyprus

It has been 46 years since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus led to the partitioning of the island, the northern third inhabited by Turkish Cypriots and the southern two-thirds by Greek Cypriots, whose government is internationally recognized. The August 1974 ceasefire line became a United Nations buffer zone, along which Cyprus remains divided.

Statement on situations of concern in Nigeria

The Executive Committee of the World Council of Churches, meeting by video conference on 20-24 July 2020, takes special note of a number of situations of concern that have been brought to its attention in Nigeria. Nigeria is one of the WCC’s priority countries in the context of the Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace, and Africa’s most populous nation, with many diverse communities of faith, and a vibrant church and ecumenical life.

WCC condemns violence in Kabul

As the so-called “Islamic State” claimed responsibility for an attack on a Sikh temple complex in Kabul, World Council of Churches general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit condemned the attack and offered condolences to those who have lost loved ones.

WCC welcomes Grand Mufti of Egypt

World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit received Egypt's Grand Mufti Shawki Ibrahim Abdel-Karim in the Ecumenical Centre, Geneva, Switzerland. In their meeting, the religious leaders engaged in in-depth dialogue to promote peaceful relations among diverse communities, religious freedom, values for equal citizenship and key aspects of peacebuilding and interreligious dialogue, paying special attention to combating religious extremism leading to violence in many parts of the world.

El CMI recibe al gran muftí de Egipto

El secretario general del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI), Rev. Dr. Olav Fykse Tveit, recibió al gran muftí de Egipto, Shawki Ibrahim Abdel-Karim, en el Centro Ecuménico de Ginebra (Suiza). Durante su reunión, ambos líderes religiosos entablaron un intenso diálogo con miras a promover las relaciones pacíficas entre diversas comunidades, la libertad religiosa, los valores que propician la igualdad ciudadana, y aspectos clave de la consolidación de la paz y el diálogo interreligioso. En este sentido, prestaron especial atención a la lucha contra el extremismo religioso que conduce a la violencia en muchos lugares del mundo.

Father Jacques Mourad, priest held hostage by Islamic State, reflects on what he learned

Father Jacques Mourad is a monk and priest of the community of Mar Moussa in Syria. He is very active in Islamic-Christian dialogue and belongs to the diocese of Homs of the Syriac Catholic Church. In 2015, he was captured and held hostage by the Islamic State, before escaping with the help of Muslims. During Advent, Father Mourad visited the Ecumenical Centre, where he led a special midday prayer for peace in Syria and the Middle East.

El padre Jacques Mourad es un monje y sacerdote de la comunidad de Mar Musa en Siria. Es muy activo en el diálogo islámico-cristiano y pertenece a la diócesis de Homs de la Iglesia Católica Siria. En 2015, fue capturado y retenido como rehén por el Estado Islámico, antes de escapar con la ayuda de los musulmanes. Durante el Adviento, el padre Mourad visitó el Centro Ecuménico, donde dirigió una oración especial de mediodía por la paz en Siria y Oriente Medio.

WCC condemns attacks in Nigeria, Syria and Somalia, calls for end to violence

World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit condemned attacks across the world that have occurred during a violent week during which many have lost their lives or lost their loved ones. “Violent attacks on innocent human beings in the name of any religion cannot be accepted, and should not be accepted by any religion.”
