Prof. Jace Pillay reflects on importance of churches in upholding children’s rights

Prof. Jace Pillay, South African research chair for Education and Care in Childhood at the University of Johannesburg, reflected on the importance of churches in ensuring the rights of children.

Twin brother of World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay, Jace Pillay noted that South Africa has very good policies with regard to childrens rights —but in many areas those policies exist only on paper, as they are not implemented.

Desmond Tutu turns 90 with an outpouring of love from the world

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, one of South Africa's most famous persons, has turned 90 with a Eucharist service celebration at Cape Town's St George's Cathedral, receiving an outpouring of love from around the world. Tutu made a rare public appearance on 7 October at the iconic Cape Town cathedral, the site of prayers and protests during the apartheid era, where he attended a special thanksgiving service.

Church leaders in southern Africa participate in child safeguarding workshops

Church leaders in South Africa and Zimbabwe are participating in online workshops on Churches and Child Safeguarding” on 3 and 5 August. Part of the World Council of Churches (WCC) partnership program with UNICEF, ChurchesCommitments to Children,” the workshops are designed to nurture churches where children feel welcome and safe.

Plaatjes van Huffel, die sich als Führungspersönlichkeit einer transformativen Kirche einen Namen gemacht hatte, ist am 19. Mai verstorben.

Un service commémoratif en ligne pour la pasteure Mary-Anne Plaatjies van Huffel a réuni des membres de sa famille, des amis, des collègues et des étudiants qui ont pleuré le décès de la présidente du Conseil œcuménique des Églises (COE) pour l’Afrique. Mme Plaatjies van Huffel, connue comme responsable d’Église à l’action transformatrice en Afrique subsaharienne, est décédée le 19 mai.

WCC mourns passing of Prof. Vuyani Vellem

With great sadness, the World Council of Churches (WCC) received news of the demise of Prof. Vuyani Vellem on 4 December. A member of the WCC’s Commission on Ecumenical Education and Formation, Vellem was director of the Centre for Public Theology and associate professor at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. He also served as deputy secretary of the South Africa Council of Churches.
