We bring you greetings from all the Heads of Churches in Jerusalem and their various communities as you gather to consider the next stage in the work of Mission and Evangelism of the Christian Churches.

This Cross is a token of our love and prayers that God will richly bless all of you and guide your deliberations. It was made by Christian craftsmen in Bethlehen, whose very livelihoods are in danger because of the on-going situation in the Holy Land.

Nous vous saluons de la part de tous les dirigeants des Eglises de Jérusalem et de leurs communautés au moment où vous vous réunissez pour réfléchir à la prochaine étape du travail de mission et d'évangélisation des Eglises chrétiennes.

Cette croix est un signe de notre amour et des prières que nous adressons à Dieu pour qu'il vous bénisse tous abondamment et qu'il guide vos délibérations. Elle a été faite à Bethléem par des artisans chrétiens dont les moyens d'existence sont menacés en raison de la situation qui prévaut en Terre Sainte.

Le présent document est le premier d'une série de textes qui seront publiés à intervalles irréguliers, d'abord sur Internet puis, pour certains, sur papier. Sous le titre "La mission et l'évangélisation dans l'unité aujourd'hui", ce document a été adopté en 2000 par la Commission de mission et d'évangélisation du Conseil oecuménique des Eglises pour servir de document d'étude au cours de la phase préparatoire de la Conférence mondiale sur la mission et l'évangélisation.

The present document is the result of a study process started in response to strong suggestions made during the 2002 meeting of the WCC Central Committee to the three staff teams on Faith & Order, Interreligious Relations, Mission & Evangelism and their respective commissions or advisory bodies. The question of the theological approach to religious plurality had been on the agenda of the WCC many times, reaching some consensus in 1989 and in 1990. In recent years, it was felt that a new approach to this difficult and controversial issue was needed.

Le présent document est l'aboutissement d'un processus d'étude lancé en réponse à de claires suggestions que, au cours de sa réunion de 2002, le Comité central a faites à trois équipes du COE : Foi et constitution, Relations et dialogue interreligieux et Mission et évangélisation, ainsi qu'à leurs commissions ou organes consultatifs respectifs. La question de l'approche théologique de la pluralité religieuse a figuré à plusieurs reprises à l'ordre du jour du COE, ce qui a permis d'aboutir à une sorte de consensus en 1989 et 1990.1 Ces dernières années, il a été jugé nécessaire d'aborder une fois encore cette question difficile, qui suscite de nombreuses controverses.

I have been asked to share in this Conference, on the eve of Pentecost, some experiences and reflections of a participant in the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI) of the World Council of Churches.

I will do this with regards to:

Whether and how our current discourse on and quest for reconciliation in many societies around the world can be related to the situation in Palestine-Israel. As well as an interpretation of the ministry of the EAPPI in the light of concerns for reconciliation.

Dans le cadre de cette conférence, on m'a demandé de vous faire part, en cette veille de la Pentecôte, de certaines expériences et réflexions de quelqu'un qui a participé au Programme oecuménique d'accompagnement en Palestine et en Israël (EAPPI), mis en place par le Conseil oecuménique des Eglises.

Cette Conférence mondiale sur la mission et l'évangélisation était la première à se dérouler dans un contexte essentiellement orthodoxe. Les jeunes, bien que beaucoup moins nombreux que prévu, y ont joué un rôle important. Pour la première fois, la Conférence a accueilli parmi ses participants à part entière un nombre significatif de délégués d'Eglises non membres du COE : l'Eglise catholique romaine et plusieurs Eglises et réseaux pentecôtistes et évangéliques. En conséquence, quand nous disons ‘nous', nous nous référons à un groupe très divers, composé de personnes venues de tous les coins du monde, de nombreux milieux ethniques et culturels, parlant de nombreuses langues et représentant les grandes traditions chrétiennes. Notre thème est une prière : ‘Viens, Esprit Saint, guéris et réconcilie'.

There have been references and echoes of the theme of reconciliation in the theological discussion of mission throughout the previous century, but it is only in the last decade and a half that it has emerged as an important way of talking about Christian mission. David Bosch's 1992 magisterial work, Transforming Mission, makes no mention of it. Stephen Bevans and Roger Schroeder's recent book, Constants in Context published in 2004, on the other hand, has multiple references to reconciliation. What has happened?

Tout au long du siècle dernier, le thème de la réconciliation a été, directement ou indirectement, mentionné dans les discussions entre théologiens à propos de la mission ; pourtant, ce n'est que depuis une quinzaine d'années qu'il s'est manifesté comme une manière importante de parler de la mission. Dans son ouvrage magistral paru en 1992, Dynamique de la mission chrétienne (Labor et Fides, 1995), David Bosch n'en parle pas. Par contre, il y est fait plusieurs fois référence dans le récent livre de Stephen Bevans et Roger Schroeder Constants in Context, publié en 2004. Que s'est-il passé ?

How old was Jesus when he first delivered His message? According to the WCC standards He would have been considered a youth. He would have been placed into a special category, offered a pre-conference and have a lovely misspelled T-Shirt.

I was born into a Christian home, the daughter and granddaughter of Pentecostal pastors. I was brought up and educated with love and devotion, being the youngest child with two older brothers.

From childhood I was given instruction on the Christian way and learned to love Jesus. When I came to an understanding of the plan of salvation, I was baptized and received the gift of the Holy Spirit with speaking in tongues.

Diseases such as AIDS today, or leprosy in earlier times, push those suffering from them to the margins of society - or keep them within society, provided there is some guarantee that everyone else will be safe. These diseases are of such nightmarish proportions that this social logic seems well-founded. So of course it sounds like sheer absurdity when we hear the witness of the monasticism of the Egyptian desert (ca. 5th c.). Abba Agathon, we are told, was aflame with such love that he wanted to find a leper and exchange his own body for that of the leper!
