Impact of climate change: women and children bearing the brunt

From 2020 to 2021, more than 50 million people were displaced due to weather events and faced risks of trafficking and even death as well as discrimination based on race and gender. This finding emerged from the report of Ian Fry, special rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of climate change, to the 53rd session of the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva from 19 June-14 July.

A joint publication of the World Council of Churches (WCC) and ACT Alliance, this study document aims to clarify the understanding of ecumenical diakonia and to provide a common platform for acting and reflecting together for the churches and ecumenical partners worldwide. 

The major publication outlines the theological components of diakonia and offers practical content for those engaged in the service of diakonia. The study document is intended to be used for formation and training in ecumenical diakonia, to strengthen the institutional capacity of those involved in diakonia, and to foster dialogue and cooperation between churches, ecumenical partners, ACT Alliance and the WCC.

El Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI), en colaboración con la Federación Luterana Mundial (FLM), Soka Gakkai International y Braham Kumaris, organizó un evento paralelo titulado “Adoptar medidas climáticas: apoyar un sólido balance mundial desde una perspectiva ética y de derechos humanos”, el 5 de junio en Bonn (Alemania). El evento reunió a expertos y partes interesadas con el fin de hacer hincapié en la importancia de integrar los derechos humanos, consideraciones éticas y la justicia climática en el próximo proceso de balance mundial.

Le Conseil œcuménique des Églises (COE), en collaboration avec la Fédération luthérienne mondiale (FLM), Soka Gakkai International et Brahma Kumaris, a organisé une manifestation parallèle intitulée «Concrétiser l’action climatique: soutenir un Bilan mondial robuste axé sur les droits humains et éthique» le 5 juin à Bonn, en Allemagne. L’événement a rassemblé des expert-e-s et parties prenantes dans le but de mettre l’accent sur l’importance d’intégrer les droits humains, les considérations éthiques et la justice climatique dans le prochain processus du Bilan mondial.

Der Ökumenischer Rat der Kirchen (ÖRK) versammelte sich am 5. Juni zusammen mit dem Lutheranischen Weltbund (LWB), Soka Gakkai International und Brahma Kumaris in Bonn, Deutschland zu einem Nebenevent mit dem Titel „Deliver climate action: Support a Robust Global Stocktake from a human rights and Ethical perspective“ (Effektiver Klimaschutz: Unterstützung einer robusten globalen Bestandsaufnahme aus menschenrechtlicher und ethischer Perspektive). Beim Event versammelten sich Expertinnen und Experten sowie Stakeholder und betonten, wie wichtig es sei, bei der nächsten globalen Bestandsaufnahme Menschenrechte, ethische Faktoren und Klimaschutz zu berücksichtigen.

The World Council of Churches (WCC), in collaboration with the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), Soka Gakkai International, and Brahma Kumaris, convened a side event titled "Deliver climate action: Support a Robust Global Stocktake from a human rights and Ethical perspective," on 5 June in Bohn, Germany. The event brought together experts and stakeholders to emphasize the importance of integrating human rights, ethical considerations, and climate justice into the forthcoming Global Stocktake process.

At diakonia conference in Norway, world’s pressing challenges and gratitude share the stage

World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay served as a keynote speaker at the Ninth Conference for Research in Diakonia and Christian Social Practice, hosted by the International Society for the Research and Study of Diakonia and Christian Social Practice and VID Specialized University.
