This week world leaders are gathered in Davos under the very theme of “Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World”. They do so at a time when we see poverty amongst plenty; hunger and thirst in the midst of abundance; shocking disparities in the quality of life between neighboring communities: real problems that the world has the potential and the possibilities to resolve.

In seiner Botschaft an das Weltwirtschaftsforum hat der Generalsekretär des Ökumenischen Rates der Kirchen, Pastor Dr. Olav Fykse Tveit, verdeutlicht, dass es für ihn kaum eine größere Antithese zur Vision von einem gemeinsamen Leben und einer geteilten Verantwortung geben könne als die fortdauernde Existenz von Nuklearwaffen und deren Unterstützung durch Politik und Gesellschaft.

In a message to the World Economic Forum, World Council of Churches general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit said he can think of no greater antithesis to a vision of shared life and responsibility than the continued existence of and political and social support for nuclear weapons.

"Over a number of years, the World Council of Churches Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance (WCC-EAA) has advocated for governments, intergovernmental organizations, religious leaders, faith organizations and individuals to fulfil their commitments to contribute to the vision of ‘getting to zero’ – zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination, and zero AIDS-related deaths,” explains Francesca Merico, HIV campaign coordinator of the WCC-EAA.

In einem an die wichtigsten Volkswirtschaften der Welt gerichteten Appell, der im Vorfeld ihres alljährlichen Gipfeltreffens veröffentlicht wurde, haben der Ökumenische Rat der Kirchen (ÖRK), das ACT-Bündnis und die Gesamtafrikanische Kirchenkonferenz die Führungsverantwortlichen der G20-Staaten dringend aufgefordert, Maßnahmen zur Überwindung des Hungers und zur Stärkung von Gerechtigkeit und Frieden am Horn von Afrika zu ergreifen.

As part of a Call to Action issued just before an annual meeting of the leaders of the world’s largest economies, the WCC, ACT Alliance and All Africa Conference of Churches urged G20 leaders to take action to overcome hunger and sustain justice and peace in the Horn of Africa.
