PROCMURA (Programme for Christian-Muslim Relations in Africa), an ecumenical Christian organization that focuses on strengthening Christian-Muslim relations at all levels, dedicated a new central office and conference centre on 2 July in Nairobi, Kenya.

Delegates from Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Tanzania and Togo attended the dedication ceremony. Dr Agnes Abuom, moderator of the World Council of Churches (WCC) Central Committee, attended and presented a goodwill message that commended PROCMURA for answering a worldwide call for justice and peace.

Representatives from the All Africa Conference of Churches, Organisation of African Instituted Churches and St. Paul’s University also attended.

The dedication of the office complex was performed by the chairperson of PROCMURA, Rev. Dr Josiah Idowu Fearon, secretary general of the Anglican Communion worldwide. He was assisted by bishops, ministers and partners.

PROCMURA is working toward a vision for a continent where Christian and Muslim communities, in spite of their differences, work together for justice, peace and reconciliation, toward the holistic development of the human family and the environment.

Founded in 1959, PROCMURA is established in 20 countries and visible in 10 others.

The WCC has been a supporter of PROCMURA for many years, said Dr Clare Amos, WCC programme executive for Interreligious Dialogue and Cooperation. “Under the excellent long-term leadership of general adviser Rev. Dr Johnson Mbillah, PROCMURA has made a considerable impact on Christian-Muslim relations in Sub-Saharan Africa, offering both peace-building and educational expertise to churches and communities,” she said. “I particularly appreciate the way that Dr Mbillah has also been very committed to affirming the roles of women, and enhancing their contribution to PROCMURA’s work.”
