WCC extends condolences upon passing of Dr Gabriel Habib

World Council of Churches acting general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca extended condolences on behalf of the global fellowship upon the passing of Dr Gabriel Habib, who served the Middle East Council of Churches as secretary general from 1977 to 1994, and was also involved for many years in the ecumenical movement.

WCC mourns the death of Patriarch Ignatius IV

The World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit expressed “deepest sorrow” on the death of Patriarch Ignatius IV (Hazim) of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East. He passed away on 5 December in Lebanon, at age 92.Â

European Youth Hearing on Poverty, Wealth and Ecology

In response to the call to raise the voice of young people on climate justice, the young delegates of a WCC-CEC consultation on Poverty, Wealth and Ecology, representing young Christians in Europe through the Ecumenical Youth Council in Europe, World Student Christian Federation Europe Region and SYNDESMOS, the World Fellowship of Orthodox Youth, presented the following contribution to be taken into account in the process of the global ecumenical AGAPE consultation.

Staff appointments in the WCC in 2003

Alexander Belopopsky from the UK was appointed coordinator of the WCC Public Information team by the WCC officers meeting in November 2003. Belopopsky, a lay member of the Orthodox Church (Ecumenical Patriarchate), has been responsible for the WCC Europe Desk since February 1996, and will move into his new position at the beginning of 2004. He replaces Sara Speicher from the USA, who moved to the UK end-November after 7 years with the Council. Before coming to the WCC, Belopopsky served as secretary-general of SYNDESMOS, the World Fellowship of Orthodox Youth. He has a degree in modern history from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, France.
