The Executive Committee of the World Council of Churches (WCC) will discuss the situation in Iraq, Cyprus and Sri Lanka at its forthcoming regular meeting from 18 to 21 February. Also on its agenda will be the search for candidates for the post of general secretary, preparations for the WCC's next assembly, and the follow-up to the work of the Special Commission on Orthodox Participation in the WCC.  The Committee will also have to decide on this year's focus for the Decade to Overcome Violence.

Questions on the future shape of the ecumenical movement and of the World Council of Churches (WCC) dominated this year's WCC Central Committee meeting in Geneva. The meeting adjourned on Tuesday, 3 September. Â

Amid a series of comments on world trouble spots, the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches (WCC) expressed "concern and alarm" Monday (2 September) about United States aims to overthrow the government of Iraq.

Rev. Dr Konrad Raiser, general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), will lead a delegation to the Horn of Africa, 1-16 July. The main purpose of the visit is to learn more about the ongoing conflicts in the region and the peace-building role churches can play. Raiser notes that a major need is "to reflect with the churches on the challenge of Christians and Muslims living together without their differences turning into sources of conflict". The delegation will visit northern and southern Sudan, Ethiopia and Eritrea, Tanzania and Kenya.

The treatment of internally displaced people (IDPs) and refugees is being highlighted by the World Council of Churches (WCC) at the 58th session of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR) beginning today, 18 March, and continuing through 26 April.
