In his address to the World Leaders Forum held at the Columbia University on 2 December, UN secretary-general António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres spoke on the "State of the Planet.” He described our planet as "broken" and humanity as waging a suicidal war on the natural world. The fatal and disastrous consequences, including runaway climate change, biodiversity loss, and the COVID-19 pandemic, are increasingly apparent.

During an ecumenical prayer service on 4 October for the close of Season of Creation, World Council of Churches moderator Dr Agnes Abuom reflected on economic justice and care for the earth.

The 10th Annual Desmond Tutu Peace Lecture, titled “Climate Justice Globally: Now and for the Future,” will take place on 7 October online. During a webtalk entitled “10 years Human Right to Water - problems, positions, perspectives,” held on 1 September, expert speakers highlighted how the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the acute lack of water and the unacceptable sanitary conditions in which large parts of the world’s population have to live every day. Some 3 in 10 people worldwide still do not have safe access to clean drinking water. More than half of the global population cannot use acceptable toilets.

As the ecumenical family celebrates Season of Creation, churches across the world are showing their strong passion for climate justice and caring for the Earth. In London, this passion has been in evidence this week as church leaders and lay people joined marches, peacefully advocating for change even despite the threat of being arrested.

The Season of Creation, an annual celebration of prayer and action for the environment, begins on 1 September. During this annual event, Christians around the world renew their relationship with the Creator and all creation through celebration, conversion, and commitment.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) will join many in honoring indigenous communities across the world on 9 August. Designated by the United Nations as “International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples,” this year the day is particularly honoring indigenous people for seeking unique solutions to the COVID-19 pandemic, and for leading the way in sustainable living in a post-COVID-19 era.
