WCC delegation meets with Patriarch Kirill in Moscow

The Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), discussed the churches and peacemaking challenges during a meeting in Moscow 22 April with Patriarch Kirill, primate of the Russian Orthodox Church, and with Metropolitan Hilarion, chair of the Russian Orthodox Church’s department of external church relations. This is their second visit in the past year. There were two issues on the agenda: violence against Christian minorities and Ukraine.

Press conference on Syria crisis to be held in Geneva

Following a WCC meeting with church leaders from Russia, Syria, the U.S. and Europe on role of the church moving all parties in Syria towards a peace agreement, following their discussions with Kofi Annan, former UN secretary general and Lakhdar Brahimi, Joint Representative for Syria, a press conference will be held on 19 September in Geneva, Switzerland.

Building peace in solidarity with the poor

A call for solidarity with the poor was delivered to a gathering of religious, political and civil society leaders from all over the world by one of the presidents of the World Council of Churches (WCC). This major ecumenical event organized by the World Council of Churches (WCC) is to take place at the University of the West Indies (UWI) in Kingston, Jamaica.

Open letter from WCC general secretary about Haiti

In an open letter to world government leaders and churches around the globe, the general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), the Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, has called for Haiti not to be forgotten and for the earthquake reconstruction process to be accountable to the people of Haiti, not only to international donors. That accountability must include those who need the reconstruction most desperately. The churches should reflect unity and be involved in the reconstruction in the broader sense.
