Human trafficking continues to remain one of the most grievous assaults on the fundamental rights and inherent dignity of people. The crime, also known as modern-day slavery, is dehumanising in the sense that it corrupts one’s identity as being made in the image of God, instead reducing one to a mere commodity or object.

In these exceptional times, we turn to the One who prays: “Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.” Let your face shine upon your whole creation, O God. Incline your ear to your family. Protect all who are suffering in this time of pandemic, especially in Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, and the many countries experiencing new surges of COVID-19. Compassionate God, Hear our cry.

O God, you wipe away all tears from our faces. You have swallowed up death. Awaken and strengthen within us that hope into which you have called us: nothing will separate us from your love. Let us be glad and rejoice! We ask this all in the name of Jesus, our Saviour and Lord. Lord, have mercy.

An exercise in hoping

I’m writing this text exactly one year after Brazil declared quarantine, on 16 March. Last year we went into quarantine thinking it would only be two weeks at home, and maybe a few months of wearing masks and sanitizing our hands. I’m the first to confess that I’ve underestimated the virus. However, we all know that is not how it went. Month after month went by - the internet joked about how could it possibly be August already, when last week was March?
