The World Council of Churches (WCC), a global fellowship of 352 churches representing more than half a billion Christians from around the world, has been deeply involved in the work of the United Nations from as early as 1946 through its Commission of the Churches on International Affairs (CCIA). The WCC is a platform for common action by churches on issues that negate or threaten the dignity of all people. 

Zacchaeus Tax (ZacTax) is an ecumenical campaign by churches, seeking a transformed global tax system that acts like the biblical character Zacchaeus, delivering equity and making reparation for historic and structural injustice.

The Churches’ Commission for Migrants in Europe, at its General Assembly held in Rome on 6-8 November, published a message entitled “Protect people, protect our humanity." The message acknowledged the immense work being done by churches and other people of good will all over Europe.

La Dra. Abuom es la primera mujer y la primera africana en desempeñar este importante cargo. También es directora ejecutiva de la organización Research and Development Consultants - TAABCO, con sede en Nairobi (Kenia). En su reflexión, tratándose de la víspera del Día Internacional de la Mujer, y siendo ella misma una mujer africana, analiza la relación entre la pobreza, la escasez de agua y sus repercusiones para las mujeres. Su reflexión se encuadra también en el contexto actual en el que Kenia está sufriendo las consecuencias de una grave sequía que no hace más que empeorar la situación de la mujer en el país, dado que las mujeres son las principales responsables de ir a buscar el agua para sus familias en la mayoría de los casos.

Recognising that we all live in multi-religious societies, African church leaders gathered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, during the 2016 World Council of Churches (WCC) Commission of the Churches on International Affairs (CCIA) regional workshop on “Birth Registration and Gender Discriminatory Nationality Laws in Africa”, stressed the need to develop inter-faith strategies and affirmations in our advocacy work for the human rights of stateless people.

Christian health networks appeal for global equity and solidarity in access to Covid-19 vaccines

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

I had addressed you less than a week ago at the opening of the WCC Eco School 2020-2021 on Sunday evening, Geneva time. And here I am addressing you at the closing. The past 5 days have passed very quickly.  I have been updated by my colleagues responsible for the Eco School that this was an unique experience for all of them and I am sure for you as well. Carrying out a training programme for 5 consecutive days beyond midnight was new for most of them.  But I gather it has been a very enriching experience for them journeying with you all imparting this important training and at the same time listening to your valuable comments, questions and feedback.  But as I said in the opening, despite the geographic and time divide, we are united together virtually for a common cause  -  and that it eco justice! 

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

We are deeply privileged to conduct this Eco- School with all of you, with the youth from 5 different nations, in Fiji, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Tonga and Vanuatu. We are truly blessed to join you, the Pacific youth, along with the global ecumenical family and partners for this opening ceremony. We are holding hands virtually, bridging the oceans, the geographic and time divide, and the disruptions caused by the COVID 19 pandemic. We thank you, the Pacific youth, for your time and commitment.

In the southern part of Cape Town lies the beautiful False Bay, home to dolphins, seals, whales, surfers, and swimmers. It is a treasured part of Cape Town life where many go to spend family time on the beautiful beaches and the warmer waters of the Indian Ocean.

In the reign of Jehoiakim, King of Judah, in 597 BCE, Babylonians attacked and carried the king and the elite into exile, alongside the articles or sacred utensils from the temple. An utterly humiliating experience like this could hardly be interpreted as being the will of God.

Tribulation” is certainly an appropriate description for the previously unimaginable scale of the COVID-19 pandemic. It has affected almost everyone around the world, whether through the direct impacts on our health or the health of our loved ones, the sudden restrictions on all our movements, or the fear of the virus arriving in our lives.

Following Jesus requires consistency between the proclamation of our faith, liturgy and prayer, and the practice of justice that we develop, since the peace of God is a fruit of that justice. This gospel passage allows us to ask ourselves whether we are followers of Jesus.
