With a prayer service on Ash Wednesday in Sealite Mihret Orthodox cathedral in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the WCC's Ecumenical Water Network began its annual Lenten campaign “Seven Weeks for Water”. This year during Lent it will raise awareness of water justice issues in Africa.

The 54th meeting of the WCC Commission of the Churches on International Affairs (CCIA) began today in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, marking its yearly regional focus on Africa. During the meeting CCIA members are discussing the commission’s previous work and its outcomes focusing on Middle East, as well as setting strategic directions for activities until 2021.

Christianity is growing faster in Africa than anywhere else in the world says Rev. Fr Dr Lawrence Iwuamadi, Professor of Ecumenical Biblical Hermeneutics at the Ecumenical Institute, Bossey. He was the convener of a discussion on the Anthology of African Christianity held by the WCC on 15 February with a panel of experts at the Ecumenical Centre in Geneva.

Eine Delegation des ÖRK unter Leitung von Dr. Agnes Abuom, der Vorsitzenden des ÖRK-Zentralausschusses, hat am 21. und 22. Oktober Addis Abeba (Äthiopien) besucht und damit die Solidarität des ÖRK mit seinen Mitgliedskirchen in dem afrikanischen Land demonstriert. Die Delegation traf mit Leitungsverantwortlichen der Mitgliedskirchen, Mitgliedern des äthiopischen Interreligiösen Rates und Angehörigen der Regierung zusammen.

A delegation from the WCC, led by WCC Central Committee moderator Dr Agnes Abuom, visited Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 21-22 October as an expression of solidarity to the member churches there. The delegation met with leaders of member churches, members of the Ethiopian interfaith council, and government representatives.

Una delegación del CMI, encabezada por la moderadora del Comité Central del CMI, Dra. Agnes Abuom, visitó Addis Abeba (Etiopía) el 21 y 22 de octubre para manifestar su solidaridad con las iglesias miembros del país. La delegación se reunió con dirigentes de las iglesias miembros, miembros del Consejo Interreligioso de Etiopía y representantes del gobierno.

When the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa re-joined the WCC in June after 55 years, other churches in the country rejoiced at “the return of the prodigal son”. The church, started in the 17th century by European settlers in southern Africa, was once referred to as “the National Party at prayer” so closely tied was its doctrine to the racist ideology of apartheid, and its influence reaching into the cabinet.

Während eines zweitägigen Dialogs zwischen dem Muslimischen Ältestenrat und dem ÖRK in Genf (Schweiz) ging es am 30. September und 1. Oktober um die Rolle der Religionen in der Friedensförderung und der Bekämpfung von Gewalt. Zwei Gesprächsrunden, bei denen der ÖRK als Gastgeber fungierte, umfassten Präsentationen und Diskussionen zu wesentlichen Aspekten der Friedensarbeit und des interreligiösen Dialogs mit besonderem Augenmerk auf der Bekämpfung eines religiösen Extremismus, der an vielen Orten der Welt zu Gewalt führt.

The role of religions in promoting peace and countering violence was discussed during a two-day dialogue between the Muslim Council of Elders and the WCC in Geneva, Switzerland from 30 September to 1 October. Two sessions of talks, hosted by the WCC, involved presentations and discussions on key aspects of peacebuilding and interreligious dialogue, paying special attention to combating religious extremism leading to violence in many parts of the world.

Un diálogo celebrado los días 30 de septiembre y 1 de octubre en Ginebra (Suiza) entre el Consejo Musulmán de Ancianos y el CMI se centró en el papel de las religiones en la promoción de la paz y la lucha contra la violencia. Las dos sesiones de charlas, organizadas por el CMI, incluyeron presentaciones y debates sobre los aspectos clave del establecimiento de la paz y el diálogo interreligioso, y prestaron especial atención a la lucha contra el extremismo religioso que degenera en violencia en muchas partes del mundo.

Le rôle des religions dans la promotion de la paix et la lutte contre la violence a fait l’objet de deux jours de dialogue entre le Muslim Council of Elders et le COE, à Genève (Suisse), du 30 septembre au 1ᵉʳ octobre. Deux sessions d’échanges ont été organisées par le COE, avec des présentations et des discussions sur des aspects essentiels de la consolidation de la paix et du dialogue interreligieux. Une attention particulière était accordée à la lutte contre l’extrémisme religieux, qui est à l’origine de violences dans de nombreux pays du monde.
