World Council of Churches acting general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca expressed great concern in the wake of a 7.3-magnitude earthquake that struck the northern part of Luzon Island in the Philippines on 27 July.

As the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to journalists Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov, World Council of Churches (WCC) acting general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca congratulated them and expressed solidarity with their ongoing fight for justice and peace.

Tras conocerse la concesión del Premio Nobel de la Paz a los periodistas Maria Ressa y Dmitry Muratov, el secretario general en funciones del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI), Rev. Prof. Dr. Ioan Sauca, felicitó a los galardonados y expresó su solidaridad con su lucha constante por la justicia y la paz. 

À l’annonce de l’attribution du prix Nobel de la paix à deux journalistes, Maria Ressa et Dmitry Muratov, le père Ioan Sauca, secrétaire général par intérim du Conseil œcuménique des Églises (COE), leur a adressé ses félicitations et a exprimé sa solidarité avec leur lutte constante pour la justice et la paix.

Nach der Verleihung des Friedensnobelpreises an die Journalistin Maria Ressa und ihren Kollegen Dmitri Muratow gratulierte ihnen der geschäftsführende Generalsekretär des Ökumenischen Rates der Kirchen (ÖRK), Priester Prof. Dr. Ioan Sauca, zu dieser Würdigung und erklärte sich solidarisch mit ihrem anhaltenden Kampf für Gerechtigkeit und Frieden.

Dans une lettre du 13 juillet adressée au Conseil de sécurité des Nations Unies, Diálogo Intereclesial por la Paz en Colombia (DiPaz), une plateforme interecclésiale pour la paix en Colombie, a demandé à la communauté internationale d’appeler le gouvernement colombien à reprendre la mise en œuvre de l’accord de paix et à renforcer les canaux de dialogue pour résoudre les problèmes sociétaux.

In einem Schreiben an den Sicherheitsrat der Vereinten Nationen (UN) vom 13. Juli hat die zwischenkirchliche Plattform für einen Dialog für Frieden in Kolumbien, der „Diálogo Intereclesial por la Paz en Colombia“ (DiPaz), an die internationale Staatengemeinschaft appelliert, die kolumbianische Regierung dringend aufzurufen, die umfassende Umsetzung des Friedensabkommens wiederaufzunehmen und die Gesprächskanäle für die Lösung der gesellschaftlichen Probleme zu stärken.

En una carta dirigida el 13 de julio al Consejo de Seguridad de las Naciones Unidas, el Diálogo Intereclesial por la Paz en Colombia (DiPaz), plataforma intereclesial para el diálogo por la paz en ese país, hizo un llamado a la comunidad internacional para que inste al gobierno colombiano a que reanude la plena aplicación del acuerdo de paz y fortalezca los canales de diálogo para resolver problemas sociales.

In a 13 July letter to the United Nations Security Council, the Diálogo Intereclesial por la Paz en Colombia (DiPaz), an interchurch platform for dialogue for peace in Colombia, called on the international community to urge the Colombian government to resume the full implementation of the peace agreement and strengthen channels of dialogue to resolve societal issues.

As a report on human rights abuses in the Philippines was delivered to the UN by the global group Investigate PH, churches and human rights groups reiterated their concerns over propagation of a culture that allows the abuse to happen.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) has just published two new Bible studies penned by authors from Colombia. Both focus on aspects of the WCC Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace.

Fourteen church leaders and activists from Canada, India, Indonesia, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States, embarked on a Pilgrim Team Visit to the Philippines from 9-13 August. They listened, learned and bore witness to the escalating human rights crisis in the country. The visit was convened by the World Council of Churches in partnership with the National Council of Churches in the Philippines.

“We express our deepest concern with regard to the search for peace in Colombia, and we call upon the Colombian government and all armed actors to refrain from targeting social leaders and communities in conflict zones”, said Rev. Frank Chikane, moderator of the World Council of Churches’ (WCC) Commission of the Churches on International Affairs (CCIA), in light of the recent killings of social leaders in Micoahumado, South Bolivar, and elsewhere around the country.

“Expresamos nuestra profunda preocupación con respecto a la búsqueda de la paz en Colombia, y exhortamos al Gobierno colombiano y a todos los actores armados a abstenerse de atacar a los líderes sociales y a las comunidades de las zonas de conflicto”, dijo el Rev. Frank Chikane, moderador de la Comisión de las Iglesias para Asuntos Internacionales (CIAI) del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI), ante los recientes asesinatos de líderes sociales en Micoahumado, en el sur de Bolívar, así como en otros lugares del país.

Der Ökumenische Rat der Kirchen (ÖRK) hat das Massaker an 14 Bäuerinnen und Bauern durch die Polizei in der Stadt Canlaon und den Gemeinden Manjuyod und Santa Catalina in der Provinz Negros Oriental auf den Philippinen Anfang dieses Monats verurteilt. Zudem hat der ÖRK auch seinen Aufruf an die Regierung der Philippinen wiederholt, der Kultur der Straflosigkeit ein Ende zu bereiten, eine umfassende Untersuchung derartiger Tötungen sicherzustellen und die Verantwortlichen zur Rechenschaft zu ziehen.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) condemned the massacre earlier this month of 14 farmers by police officers in Canlaon City, as well as Manjuyod and Santa Catalina towns in Negros Oriental in the Philippines. The WCC also renewed its call for the government of the Philippines to end the culture of impunity and to ensure full investigation and accountability for all such killings.
