Le Comité exécutif du COE appelle «au soutien et à l’accompagnement pour les Églises et la population du Soudan»

Dans une déclaration, le Comité exécutif du Conseil œcuménique des Églises (COE) a affirmé son soutien en faveur des Églises du Soudan dans leur témoignage et leur ministère. Il s’y félicite d’une visite de solidarité œcuménique au Soudan du 20 au 25 avril effectuée conjointement par le COE, la Conférence des Églises pour toute l’Afrique et la Communauté fraternelle des Conseils et des Églises chrétiens dans la région des Grands Lacs et de la Corne de l’Afrique.

WCC executive committee urges “support and accompaniment to the churches and people of Sudan”

In a statement, the World Council of Churches (WCC) executive committee affirmed its support for the churches of Sudan in their witness and ministry. The statement welcomed an ecumenical solidarity visit to Sudan on 20-25 April undertaken jointly by the WCC, All Africa Conference of Churches, and Fellowship of Christian Councils and Churches in the Great Lakes and the Horn of Africa.

A court sentence in Sudan ordering flogging and the death penalty for Mariam Yahia Ibrahim Ishag has prompted an expression of “profound concern” from Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, general secretary of the WCC, who has urged President Omar Hassan Ahmad Al-Bashir to “prevent the implementation of this unjust and unconscionable sentence.”

South Sudan president expresses appreciation for churches’ contribution to the new nation

South Sudan president Salva Kiir Mayardit emphasized the strong potential of churches in helping to develop their new country. His comments came during a conversation with the general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, who on Friday, 25 April visited the capital city, Juba, where he met with staff and members of the Sudan Council of Churches (SCC).
