Rev. Dr Kenneth Mtata, World Council of Churches director of Public Witness and Diakonia, returned from Sudan with what he described as “a broken heart” after witnessing the plight of the people. Yet he also shared signs of hope that a pact for peace can end the suffering. 

Matthias Schmale is a UN resident and humanitarian coordinator based in Nigeria. He previously served with the UN Relief and Works Agency, and is also a former World Council of Churches (WCC) steward. He took some time to reflect on his concerns, current work, and fond memories of his days as a steward.

Rev. Dr Curtiss Paul DeYoung, co-chief executive officer of the Minnesota Council of Churches, helped convene the team of authors for this year’s Week of Prayer for Christian Unity materials. Below, he reflects on the challenges and hopes the team brought to the table as they composed the text.

Pastor Chikane ist seit 2016 Vorsitzender der Kommission der Kirchen für internationale Angelegenheiten des Ökumenischen Rates der Kirchen (ÖRK) und engagiert sich für den Kampf gegen Ungerechtigkeiten in zahlreichen Ländern der Welt. Die ÖRK-Kommunikationsabteilung hat Pastor Chikane darum gebeten, auf seine bisherige Arbeit innerhalb der Kommission zurückzublicken und über die fortwährende Berufung der Kirchen zu sprechen, ein Zeichen gegen die Ungerechtigkeiten in der Welt von heute zu setzen.

When Rev. Frank Chikane was leading the South African Council of Churches in calling out injustices of the apartheid system, their work did not stop even after the council’s office building was bombed to the ground in 1980s. Moderating the Commission of the Churches on International Affairs of the World Council of Churches (WCC) since 2016, Rev. Chikane has been engaged in addressing injustices in many parts of the world. WCC Communication asked Rev. Chikane to look back at his term at the commission and the ongoing calling of churches to address injustices in the world today.

Der Patriarch der Äthiopischen Orthodoxen Kirche Tewahedo, Seine Heiligkeit Abune Matthias, besuchte am 9. und 10. Februar 2017 den Ökumenischen Rat der Kirchen (ÖRK) und lieferte einige Denkanstöße, nicht nur über die prägende Geschichte und die Traditionen dieser alten Kirche, sondern auch zu ihrer Rolle in der äthiopischen Gesellschaft und der ökumenischen Landschaft im weiteren Sinne. Abune Matthias wurde im Jahr 2013 ins Amt gewählt, nachdem er bereits sein ganzes Leben, während einer besonders tumultreichen Zeit, im Dienst in der Kirche, in ihren Klöstern und Schulen verbracht hatte. Die Kirche zählt rund 50 Millionen Mitglieder, mehrere Millionen davon leben außerhalb Äthiopiens. Im Land selbst gehört ihr ungefähr die Hälfte der Bevölkerung an. Im folgenden Gespräch erläutert der Patriarch seine Gedanken.

The visit 9-10 February 2017 to the World Council of Churches by the Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, H.H. Abune Matthias, occasioned reflection on the distinctive history and traditions of that ancient church, as well as its role in Ethiopian society and in the larger ecumenical landscape. Coming to his work from a lifetime of service in the church and its monasteries and schools during an especially turbulent time, Abune Matthias was elected in 2013. The church numbers about 50 million members, including several million outside Ethiopia itself, where it accounts for about half the population. What follows is a brief interview with the Patriarch.
