Workshop in Bangladesh links climate, economic justice

From 29 January to 1 February, 30 representatives from various faith traditions gathered in Dhaka, Bangladesh for a workshop on “Interfaith Reflections on Just Transitions: Linking Climate and Economic Justice”. The workshop was organised by the World Council of Churches (WCC) and the Council for World Mission and was hosted by the National Council of Churches in Bangladesh.

All pilgrim routes lead to COP24

Pilgrims coming from Germany, Italy and Norway ended their journeys for climate justice on 7 December upon arrival at the St Stephen’s Church in Katowice, Poland, where the United Nations (UN) climate conference is underway. They were warmly welcomed by the delegations of the World Council of Churches (WCC) and the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) that are attending the 24th Conference of Parties of UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24).

WCC represented at International Sanitation Convention in India

World Council of Churches Ecumenical Water Network (WCC-EWN) coordinator Dinesh Suna attended the International Sanitation Convention from 29 September - 2 October in India. Suna shared his reflections on the conference, the role of EWN, and the future of sanitation and how it affects justice in the lives of millions of people.

As Kerala celebrates “comebacks” in face of disaster, churches across the world reach out

Even though flood survivors are displaced in some 2,000 relief camps across Kerala in south India, many of them observed the indigenous Malayali festival of Onam on 25 August in whatever way they could. The traditional festival, for thousands, carried an even more poignant meaning because the holiday celebrates the return of joy to the land: the story of the return of King Mahabali, considered to be a very kind and generous ruler, during a “golden period” in Kerala.

Church leaders in New Zealand and WCC address climate change with key politicians

The general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, met with church leaders and politicians in Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand last week. The meeting occurred almost one year after his latest visit to the region. On request of the church leaders a meeting took place with political leaders to discuss follow-up on the Paris Agreement, peace in the Middle East and on the Korean Peninsula, and the challenges the region is facing.

During Lent, a “carbon fast” can honour God’s creation

The Church of South India, Green Anglicans and other groups are sharing creative ways to observe a “carbon fast" during the Lenten season. A carbon fast challenges people to examine their daily actions and reflect on how they impact the environment. The carbon fast campaigns are designed so that, over Lent, people can take small steps to reduce carbon dioxide output with the hope of helping the environment and bringing the world one step closer to a sustainable existence.

ÖRK-Exekutivausschuss beschließt Pläne für das Jahr 2017

Vom 17. bis 23. November tagte der Exekutivausschuss des ÖRK zum allerersten Mal in China. Gastgeber des Besuches waren der Chinesische Christenrat und die Patriotische Drei-Selbst-Bewegung. Letztere ist eine protestantische Kirche in der Volksrepublik China und eines der größten protestantischen Gremien weltweit.

Plans for 2017 decided by WCC Executive Committee

On 17-23 November, the Executive Committee of the WCC met for the first time ever in China. The visit was hosted by the China Christian Council and the Three-Self Patriotic Movement. The Three-Self Patriotic Movement is a Protestant church in the People's Republic of China, as well as one of the largest Protestant bodies in the world.

ÖRK-Exekutivausschuss gibt Erklärung zu Klimagerechtigkeit ab

Auf seiner Tagung in Nanjing und Shanghai (China) vom 17. bis 23. November gab der Exekutivausschuss des Ökumenischen Rates der Kirchen eine Erklärung zu Klimagerechtigkeit ab, in der er „die drängende Sorge der Kirchen in Bezug auf den Klimawandel“ wiederholt und alle Staaten aufruft, die Verpflichtungen des Pariser Abkommens zu erfüllen.
