Seventy years after nuclear fireballs exploded over two Japanese cities, an ecumenical group of pilgrims has come to Hiroshima to listen to those who survived and renew the struggle against their own countries’ continued reliance on nuclear weapons.

As an ecumenical delegation to Japan participates in Hiroshima Day observances on the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing, the WCC has published a liturgical resource and invites churches around the world to join in prayer.

„Es ist höchste Zeit, die Atomwaffen abzuschaffen“, so der bayerische Landesbischof und EKD-Ratsvorsitzende Dr. Heinrich Bedford-Strohm heute in der japanischen Stadt Hiroshima, auf die am 6. August 1945 die erste Atombombe abgeworfen wurde.

Bishop Dr Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, chair of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) and a member of the church leaders’ pilgrimage to Japan on the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombings, pressed the case for the Humanitarian Pledge against nuclear weapons at the Hiroshima Day rally on 6 August 2015.

„Es ist höchste Zeit, dass wir die Politik des Festhaltens an Atomwaffen nicht länger unterstützen. Wir müssen eine Politik ablehnen, die die Massenvernichtung anderer Menschen als legitime Form des Selbstschutzes ansieht“, sagte Bischöfin Mary Ann Swenson während eines anglikanisch-katholischen Friedensgottesdienstes in der katholischen Friedenskirche in Horshima, Japan, am 5. August.

“It is time to abandon all support for retaining nuclear weapons. It is time to refuse to accept that the mass destruction of other people can be a legitimate form of protection of ourselves,” said Bishop Mary Ann Swenson at the Peace Memorial Cathedral in Hiroshima.

Kirchenleitende aus sieben Ländern, die derzeit historische Entscheidungen für oder gegen die Ächtung von Atomwaffen treffen, werden Anfang August zu einer Pilgereise in zwei japanische Städte aufbrechen, die vor 70 Jahren durch Atombomben dezimiert wurden.

Church leaders from seven countries currently making historic choices for or against outlawing nuclear weapons will embark on a pilgrimage in early August to the two Japanese cities that were decimated by atomic bombs 70 years ago.

Violence against children was one emerging issue discussed at the Christian Conference of Asia's assembly. “It is still a sad reality in large parts of the world, but momentum to end violence against children is growing within governments and communities, amongst parents and religious leaders. This is a good thing since it takes everyone to make a change”, says Lauren Rumble, UNICEF’s chief of child protection in Indonesia.

Four weeks of negotiations on nuclear weapons came to a close on Friday 22 May, as the Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty ended without a formal agreement. Despite the outcome, a bright new prospect towards a world without nuclear weapons has emerged in the form of a Humanitarian Pledge, now endorsed by 107 states, which promises “to fill the legal gap for the prohibition and elimination of nuclear weapons”.

”Truly, I am in the household of God,” began WCC associate general secretary for public witness and diakonia Dr Isabel Apawo Phiri in her keynote speech today at the 14th Assembly of the Christian Conference of Asia.

Under the theme “Living Together in the Household of God,” some 440 representatives of member churches and partner bodies from 28 countries gathered on Thursday 21 May in Jakarta, Indonesia, for the opening of the Christian Conference of Asia’s 14th General Assembly.

„Atomwaffen sind mit den Werten unserer jeweiligen Glaubenstraditionen unvereinbar“, sagten Vertreterinnen und Vertreter von etwa 50 christlichen, buddhistischen, muslimischen und jüdischen Organisationen am 1. Der Aufruf, mitgetragen vom ÖRK, wurde an der Konferenz zur Überprüfung des Vertrags über die Nichtverbreitung von Kernwaffen in New York im Rahmen von Referaten der Zivilgesellschaft gemacht.

“Nuclear weapons are incompatible with the values upheld by our respective faith traditions”, representatives of some 50 Christian, Buddhist, Muslim and Jewish organizations said on 1 May. The inter-religious statement came in a joint call to the 191 governments participating in the world’s largest disarmament treaty. The call, co-sponsored by the WCC, was made during civil society presentations to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference in New York City.

The WCC general secretary has sent a letter to the President of the Republic of Indonesia H. E. Joko Widodo appealing for clemency for the 10 death row prisoners scheduled for imminent execution in Indonesia.

After a concerted examination of the evidence presented at the Vienna Conference on the Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons and two earlier conferences, 44 of the states present called for a ban on nuclear weapons. The host government Austria added momentum with a specific, cooperative pledge to “fill the legal gap for the prohibition of nuclear weapons” and eliminate them.
