Aa the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity opened on 18 January, the World Council of Churches staff and partners gathered in a spirit of unity to “Do good; seek justice,” the theme of this year’s special week.

Le secrétaire général du Conseil œcuménique des Églises, le pasteur Jerry Pillay, a dénoncé les attaques incessantes contre les populations et les infrastructures civiles par la Russie dans sa guerre illégale menée contre le peuple d’Ukraine.

World Council of Churches general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay denounced continuing attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure in Russia’s ongoing illegal war against the people of Ukraine.

World Council of Churches (WCC) acting general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca expressed grave concern over continued recurrent attacks by Russian forces on energy facilities and other civilian infrastructure and areas in Ukraine, including most recently a maternity unit in which a newborn baby was killed.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) welcomed the news that the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to jailed Belarusian advocate Ales Bialiatski, Russian human rights organization Memorial, and the Ukrainian Center for Civil Liberties.

Осуждая незаконную и неоправданную войну, «навязанную народу и суверенному государству Украины», Центральный комитет Всемирного совета церквей (ВСЦ) выразил сожаление по поводу «ужасающего и возрастающего числа жертв, разрушений и перемещений, разорванных отношений и еще более глубоко укоренившейся враждебности между народами этого региона, усиления конфронтации  глобального масштаба, повышенного риска голода в регионах с низким уровнем продовольственной безопасности, экономических трудностей, а также повышенной социальной и политической нестабильности во многих странах».

Déplorant la guerre illégale et injustifiable «infligée au peuple et à l’État souverain d’Ukraine», le Comité central du COE s’est lamenté du «bilan effroyable qui va en s’aggravant: la mort, la destruction et le déplacement des populations; la destruction des relations et un antagonisme de plus en plus profond entre les peuples de la région; les confrontations qui s’enveniment à travers le monde; le risque accru de famine dans les régions du monde touchées par l’insécurité alimentaire; ainsi que les difficultés économiques et l’exacerbation de l’instabilité sociale et politique dans de nombreux pays».

Deploring the illegal and unjustifiable war “inflicted on the people and sovereign state of Ukraine” the World Council of Churches (WCC) central committee lamented “the awful and continuing toll of deaths, destruction and displacement, of destroyed relationships and ever more deeply entrenched antagonism between the people of the region, of escalating confrontation globally, of increased famine risk in food insecure regions of the world, of economic hardship and heightened social and political instability in many countries.”

Исполняющий обязанности генерального секретаря Всемирного совета церквей преподобный профессор д-р Иоанн Саука, услышав сообщения о более явных свидетельствах серьезных нарушений международного права в Украине, выразил возмущение в отношении этих злодеяний и призвал к полномасштабному расследованию.

Après avoir entendu des informations plus précises faisant état de graves violations du droit international en Ukraine, le secrétaire général du Conseil œcuménique des Églises, le père prof. Ioan Sauca, s’est dit horrifié par ces atrocités et appelle à ouvrir une enquête approfondie.

World Council of Churches acting general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca, upon hearing reports that give stronger indications of grave violations of international law in Ukraine, expressed abhorrence at these reported atrocities, and called for full investigation.
