The World Council of Churches (WCC) and John Wiley & Sons (Wiley) have announced that Current Dialogue, the WCC’s journal of interreligious dialogue, will from 2019 be published by Wiley as part of the WCC quarterly, The Ecumenical Review.
One of the most long-standing and respected journals in the field of interreligious dialogue, Current Dialogue started publication in 1980–81, produced by the WCC’s then programme on Dialogue with People of Living Faiths and Ideologies.
Since 2009, two WCC journals – The Ecumenical Review and the International Review of Mission – have been published by Wiley.
Under the new arrangements, Current Dialogue will be published annually in December as a regular special issue of The Ecumenical Review, with its own distinctive identity and editorial team.
“The WCC is pleased to have its three historic journals now published alongside each other by Wiley,” said the WCC general secretary, the Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit.
“There is an urgent need to promote greater understanding of the role of religions in today’s world as well as to encourage coexistence and bridge building between followers of different faiths,” he continued.
“Current Dialogue has a vital role in promoting interreligious dialogue and cooperation, and this new partnership with Wiley will strengthen the profile and work of the WCC, and expand the reach of this publication among practitioners, researchers and others interested in interfaith relations,” Tveit said.
Subscribers to The Ecumenical Review will receive and have access to Current Dialogue as part of their regular subscriptions, thereby including interreligious issues and matters of religious pluralism in a more intentional fashion.
“Over the last four decades, Current Dialogue has offered a platform for debate to those within the ecumenical movement who want to build bridges across religious divides and to their partners of different faiths,” said the Rev. Dr Peniel Jesudason Rufus Rajkumar, WCC programme coordinator for Interreligious dialogue and cooperation, and editor of Current Dialogue.
“Through the new partnership with Wiley, Current Dialogue will significantly expand its readership at a time when the issue of interreligious cooperation is a crucial matter for global cooperation,” he said.

Academic yet accessible, Current Dialogue addresses academics, interfaith practitioners, researchers, students, institutions, religious leaders of different faiths, and all those interested in the study of religions.
Current Dialogue will open space for critical and creative reflection on questions pertaining to the relations between religious communities and the complex ways in which religions converge, collide, and coalesce with each other today.
