The World Council of Churches (WCC) is a global organization with many skills and experiences. As such it can create added value for the United Nations system, the WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit said in a recent interview for the United Nations Special magazine and website.

Tveit said that “We need to deepen our relationships with the UN system”. He pointed out that the WCC is a fellowship with a “great level of accountability” which has learnt to come to consensus and commitment.

“We have complementary skills in diplomacy that we could share and the same objectives: increase justice, end corruption” and, in peacemaking and reconciliation, encouraging parties to “stop using civilians as a pretext to create violence between different groups,” he said.

In the interview, Tveit also shared his experiences as a Norwegian pastor working for peace, his ideological commitment to the ecumenical movement and meeting the challenges in leading a global ecumenical organization like the WCC.
