WCC moderator Bishop Dr Heinrich Bedford-Strohm reflected that the last months—with a world in turmoil—have shown how important the work of the WCC is. “To continue its important work, WCC needs a sustainable financial basis,” he said. “That is why, in its recent meeting, the executive committee made important decisions on the Green Village project, which is an important factor for this sustainability.”
He added: “Connecting ecological and financial sustainability is an expression the WCC’s calling to give witness to the gospel in words and deeds.”
The Green Village, the first Geneva property development with the "One Planet Living" label, will implement a range of environmentally friendly practices.
The Green Village will provide six new buildings in the municipality of Le Grand-Saconnex, arranged around the Ecumenical Centre, WCC’s historic listed building. Each building will symbolically bear the name of a key international treaty in sustainable development: Kyoto, Montreal, Rio, Lima, Durban, and Stockholm.
