The Obispo Maximo of the Philippine Independent Church, Fr. Rhee Millena Timbang, released a pastoral message on 3 August celebrating the 117thanniversary of the church.

The anniversary will be celebrated around the theme of “Be Transformed by the Renewing of Mind."

“Our mind directs our thoughts and actions, forms our attitude, understanding, and relations, and defines our position and disposition in life,” the message reads. “Its renewal is therefore important to enable us to grow in wisdom and in faith.”

The church, born in the Filipino struggle against colonialism, is a national church in the Philippines and includes 10 million members. It is in full communion with the Episcopal Church in the USA.

It is necessary for the church to renew its mind, as well, in a desire to grow maturely in faith, the message continues. “We need the renewing of our mind as a church to enhance our mission as we are called to respond to the challenges of our time and the realities of our situation,” the text reads. “We are called to renew our mind so that we shall be able to transform the various so-called cultures that undermine our mission and defile our national life.”

The church must renew its mind to discern God’s will and purpose, notes the Obispo Maximo. “We need the renewing of mind for us to become part of building a nation whose fiber, structure and foundation are the values of God’s reign,” concludes the message.
