Tribute

It is with profound sorrow that we received the news of the sad demise of Dr Shiela Mong Chowdhury, a committed Asian ecumenical leader and former president of the Christian Conference of Asia (CCA). As the coordinator and chairperson of the South Asian Councils of Churches (SACC), Dr Chowdhury has been providing leadership at various levels, especially in building up future ecumenical leaders in South Asia.

Dr Chowdhury has been involved in the WCC in various ways and has served on various committees during the past several decades. He was a delegate to several WCC assemblies including the Porto Alegre Assembly in 2006 where he served as a member of the Nomination Committee.

Trained as a medical doctor, he became head of one of the largest Christian mission hospitals in Bangladesh. Dr Chowdhury demonstrated strong Christian values and love of God through his work among the poor and marginalized tribal communities in Chittagong Hill Tracts, in remote areas of Bangladesh. His commitment and Christian witness was admired people at large in the society of Bangladesh.

The ecumenical movement acknowledges the selfless service and memorable contributions of Dr S.M.Chowdhury.

May his soul rest in peace.
