Commemorating the Armenian Genocide of 1915-23 was to have been the principal focus of the service of Sunday morning prayer on 15 November in the cathedral church of Saint-Pierre at the summit of Geneva’s old town. Following terror attacks in Beirut and Paris killing and wounding hundreds of civilians over the preceding days, the prayers of the Protestant Church of Geneva and the WCC Executive Committee took on a new dimension.

La commémoration du génocide arménien de 1915-1923 aurait dû figurer au cœur du service de prière du dimanche matin 15 novembre en la cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Genève, qui domine la vieille ville. À la suite des attentats terroristes de Beyrouth et de Paris qui, les jours précédents, ont tué des centaines de personnes, les prières de l’Église protestante de Genève et du Comité exécutif du Conseil œcuménique des Églises ont acquis une autre dimension.

The “pilgrimage is both a way to continue working for the one ecumenical movement and a way to move forward in our times that offer new dimensions, opportunities and practices,” said the WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit.

Amidst the reality of tensions often fueled by religions, a group of Christian, Muslim and Jewish youth has formed a multi-faith community. As part of an interfaith summer course sponsored by the WCC, this community wants to work for the protection of creation – a concern they say is common to all faith traditions.

Inspired by the theme “pilgrimage of justice and peace”, the Central Committee of the WCC, a chief governing body of the Council, has set directions for the work of the Council from 2014 to 2017.

In an audience with Pope Francis in the Vatican, the WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit stressed the significance of Christian unity. He also expressed appreciation for Pope Francis’s call to pray for peace in Syria and his call for churches to remember the poor, encouraging Christians to work for economic justice.

Il a en outre exprimé sa satisfaction concernant l'appel du pape François à prier pour la paix en Syrie et son exhortation faite aux Églises pour qu'elles gardent toujours les pauvres à l'esprit, encourageant les chrétiens et chrétiennes à œuvrer en faveur de la justice économique.
