A book discussion on “Ahead of Her Time: Pan-African Women of Faith and the Vision of Christian Unity, Mission, and Justice,” showed how women of pan-African descent are bringing the wisdom and fire of ecumenism into the hearts and minds of the next generation.

How do we end exclusion, racism, economic injustice? Voices from across the world brought stories—and solutions—via online events hosted by the World Council of Churches (WCC) in conjunction with the Commission on the Status of Women, the UN’s largest annual gathering on gender equality and women's empowerment.

During a Women’s Pilgrim Team Visit held on 8 March—International Women’s Day—women from North America and other parts of the globe continued to explore the theme “Stony the Road: Women’s Voices of Faith, Courage, Resistance & Resilience.” 

The visit was organized by the World Council of Churches (WCC) in collaboration with the National Council of Churches (USA).

A communique—signed by more than 30 religious organizations, including the World Council of Churches—entitled “People of Faith are Allies to Generation Equality” lifts up the role of religious leaders in transforming gender norms, implementing programmes, reforming unjust laws and promoting gender justice.

“Gender justice must be the agenda of men as well as women,” said World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit in a comment released on the occasion of International Women’s Day 2020. “The WCC as a fellowship has a shared commitment to be a community of women and men, rested equally in the image of God, and we seek for the benefit of all a just fellowship of women and men.”

After a World Council of Churches (WCC) Pilgrim Team visited South Africa, the WCC released a pastoral letter to the nation on gender-based violence, femicide and xenophobia.

On 9 December, a delegation led by World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit met with the South African president Cyril Ramaphosa and cabinet ministers in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Churches across southern Africa are publicly saying #EnoughIsEnough,” with many denominations and congregations continuing to issue strong statements, arrange special prayer events, and speak out against rising levels of violence.

Both the Dutch Reformed Church and the Uniting Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa (UPCSA) have been discussing gender justice and how to keep the momentum going on the unprecedented public demand for change.

Nathan Day Wilson is a pastor with the Disciples of Christ in the United States and currently holds the position as director of communications at the Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is associate editor and columnist for the Faith and Values section of the Indianapolis Star. Wilson was a lecturer at the seminar, “Equipping each other for Christian Witness in a multi-cultural and multi-faith world”, taking place at the Bossey Ecumenical Institute from 5-15 August.

More than 1,000 attendees at the 15th Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Churchwide Assembly have formally endorsed the Thursdays in Black campaign for a world free from rape and violence.
