Arusha conference to consider, ‘The Church: Towards a common vision’

A document published in Swahili language titled, ‘The Church: Towards a common vision’ was launched at the Conference on World Mission and Evangelism in Arusha, Tanzania on 12 March. The document is now translated into 15 languages.

Digitizing of Faith and Order Papers underway

The WCC has begun the process of digitally publishing its Faith and Order Papers, a set of legacy materials comprising 300 discrete publications and totaling 35,000 pages.

In his report to the Executive Committee, WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit noted that we are living in a time when the purpose and the objectives of the WCC are highly relevant.

Based on these realities, there is a need for a new search for unity, he said. “Through the many dimensions of its work, the WCC contributes to the unity of the church, and the unity that the WCC is able to express, in turn, contributes to the unity of humankind.”

Jürgen Moltmann receives honorary doctorate from Pretoria University

Subsídios para a Semana de Oração pela Unidade dos Cristãos em 2017

Foi no contexto do aniversário que o Conselho de Igrejas na Alemanha (ACK), a convite do Conselho Mundial de Igrejas, assumiu o trabalho de criar o material para a Semana de Oração pela Unidade dos Cristãos este ano. Rapidamente ficou claro que os materiais desta Semana de Oração pela Unidade dos Cristãos precisariam ter dois destaques. Por um lado, deveria haver uma celebração do amor e da graça de Deus, a “justificação da humanidade somente pela graça”, refletindo a idéia principal das Igrejas marcadas pela Reforma de Martinho Lutero. Por outro lado, deveria também ser reconhecida a dor das subseqüentes profundas divisões que afligiram a Igreja, com menção aberta de culpa e oferta de uma oportunidade para dar passos na direção da reconciliação. Recentemente, foi a Exortação Apostólica do papa Francisco em 2013 Evangelii Gaudium (A Alegria do Evangelho) que deu o tema para este ano, quando usou a citação “O amor de Cristo nos impele” (nº 9) Com essa frase da Escritura (2 Coríntios 5,14), tomada no contexto do capítulo 5 inteiro da segunda carta aos Coríntios, a comissão alemã formulou o tema da Semana de Oração pela Unidade dos Cristãos 2017.

Since November 2015 the task of representing the Ecumenical Patriarchate at the WCC in Geneva is in the hands of Archbishop Job of Telmessos, who is convinced: churches need not only to speak, but also to listen to each other. After a year in the office, Archbishop Job answered questions about the role of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, church unity, and the ecumenical movement.

Hosanna! Ecumenical Songs for Justice and Peace

Perhaps the greatest treasure of the ecumenical movement lies in its gatherings of songs, prayers, and other liturgical resources from around the Christian world. Now, adding to this wealth, come these 70 songs from composers around the world. Inspired by the WCC’s 10th Assembly, these songs of praise, adoration, struggle, mission, faith and hope constitute a deep resource for the pilgrimage of justice and peace. They are here published in English, French, Spanish, and German, with other languages, introduced by Andrew Donaldson, and augmented by recorded performances available online.

Hielke Wolters: Apostle of mission strategies

Rev. Dr Hielke Wolters is leaving the WCC after serving for nine years - the last seven years as associate general secretary - but he is not leaving the ecumenical movement to which he has been dedicated since his student days. Officially is he going to retire, but only on the paper. He has many thoughts and plans to realize as he moves back to the Netherlands to serve, in one way or another, the church or the wider ecumenical movement. Wolters said to WCC News with a smile: “I’m open for any suggestion and I know that God will lead me in the right direction when that time comes.”
