Ha tenido que enfrentarse a un sinnúmero de dificultades como la persecución y los periodos de enfermedad grave. Además, a los sesenta y dos años de edad, se le pidió que asumiera un nuevo cargo que representaba el compromiso con un país cuya lengua y cultura le eran desconocidas, y que era el único Estado del mundo declarado oficialmente ateo, en el que se le pedía que reconstruyera la Iglesia.
