World Council of Churches acting general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca delivered a lecture during the first edition of the “Bahrain Dialogue Forum: East and West for Human Coexistence” held 3-4 November.

The WCC Executive Committee met in Amman, Jordan from 17-23 November to approve the 2018 plan and budget and prepare for renewal of the WCC strategic plan. The Executive Committee also discerned the way forward for the WCC’s involvement in Palestine and Israel by learning more about the particular situation in Jordan and the Middle East, then discussing the challenges of the churches and the WCC response. The Patriarch of the Holy City of Jerusalem, All Palestine and Jordan, Theophilos III, welcomed the group.

Le Comité exécutif du Conseil œcuménique des Églises (COE) s'est réuni à Amman, en Jordanie, du 17 au 23 novembre pour approuver la planification et le budget pour 2018 et pour préparer le renouvellement du plan stratégique du COE. Le Comité exécutif a également déterminé la voie à suivre en termes d'implication du COE pour la justice et la paix en Palestine et Israël. Il s'est pour cela informé de la situation particulière en Jordanie et au Proche-Orient, puis a abordé la question des défis des Églises et de l'action du COE. Le patriarche de la ville sainte de Jérusalem, de toute la Palestine et de Jordanie, Theophilos III, a accueilli le groupe.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) is calling for global prayers tomorrow for just peace in the Holy Land, and for all barriers to places of worship to be removed.

For the sake of peace, church leaders in Jerusalem are calling to maintain the historical status quo on the historical designation allowing access to al-Aqsa Mosque and its courtyard, as well as other Holy Sites in the city.

Rev. Dr Hielke Wolters is leaving the WCC after serving for nine years - the last seven years as associate general secretary - but he is not leaving the ecumenical movement to which he has been dedicated since his student days. Officially is he going to retire, but only on the paper. He has many thoughts and plans to realize as he moves back to the Netherlands to serve, in one way or another, the church or the wider ecumenical movement. Wolters said to WCC News with a smile: “I’m open for any suggestion and I know that God will lead me in the right direction when that time comes.”

Le pasteur Hielke Wolters quitte le COE après y avoir travaillé pendant neuf ans, notamment au poste de secrétaire général associé ces sept dernières années, mais il ne quitte pas le mouvement œcuménique auprès duquel il est engagé depuis qu’il est étudiant. Officiellement, il prend sa retraite, mais seulement sur le papier. Il retourne aux Pays-Bas et a beaucoup d’idées et de projets pour servir, d’une manière ou d’une autre, l’Église ou le mouvement œcuménique au sens large. Le pasteur a déclaré au centre de presse du COE, avec un sourire: «je suis ouvert à toutes les suggestions et je sais que Dieu me guidera dans la bonne direction le moment venu.»

Hope in a Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace formed the integral thread for proceedings at the meeting of the Central Committee of the WCC in Trondheim, Norway this week. The 2016 meeting took place 22-28 June, the second gathering since the Central Committee was elected at the WCC 10th Assembly in Busan, Republic of Korea in 2013.

At the Wider Outlook Works Festival, as people observed the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, the WCC general secretary spoke about repentance and a change to a better direction.

Azad is a refugee from the north of Aleppo, Syria and is currently in The Jungle camp in Calais, France. “It’s hard here” says Azad, and then falls quiet. “People are hungry, cold, afraid and we can’t do anything”. He’s sitting cross-legged on the floor of a small shelter.

Commemorating the Armenian Genocide of 1915-23 was to have been the principal focus of the service of Sunday morning prayer on 15 November in the cathedral church of Saint-Pierre at the summit of Geneva’s old town. Following terror attacks in Beirut and Paris killing and wounding hundreds of civilians over the preceding days, the prayers of the Protestant Church of Geneva and the WCC Executive Committee took on a new dimension.
