The World Council of Churches (WCC) has requested correction of an article in the New York Times that listed the WCC among supporters of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS) against Israel.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) today expressed grave concern about a new law passed on Monday by the Knesset which reportedly forbids granting entry visas to foreign nationals who call for economic, cultural or academic boycotts of either Israel or the Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories. The ‘Entry to Israel Act (Denial of Visa to Non-Residents Who Knowingly Call for a Boycott on Israel)’ apparently makes no distinction between boycotting Israel proper and boycotting products of the settlements, which are widely considered illegal under international law.

Aujourd’hui, le Conseil œcuménique des Églises (COE) s’est déclaré très préoccupé par une nouvelle loi adoptée lundi par la Knesset qui interdirait l’octroi de visas d’entrée aux ressortissants étrangers ayant appelé à un boycott économique, culturel ou universitaire d’Israël ou des colonies israéliennes dans les territoires palestiniens occupés. Il semblerait que la «Loi sur l’entrée en Israël» (Refus de visas aux non-résidents ayant sciemment appelé au boycott d’Israël) ne fasse aucune distinction entre le boycott d’Israël à proprement parler et celui des produits des colonies qui sont généralement considérés comme illégaux par le droit international.

Manuel Quintero is retiring after eight years of service as the international programme coordinator for the WCC Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI). The 30th General Synod of the UCC, a member church of the WCC, has passed a resolution calling for a boycott and divestment from companies that profit in Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.

Aux États-Unis, le Synode général de l’Église unie du Christ, membre du COE, a adopté une résolution appelant à boycotter les entreprises qui profitent de l’occupation israélienne des territoires palestiniens et à retirer les investissements de ces entreprises.

An influential document full of hopes and aspirations, having received worldwide acclaim for highlighting the struggle of Palestinians against oppressive Israeli occupation, continues to seek a future after its fifth anniversary was celebrated in December last year.

Continuing with a long-time commitment of the WCC, a recent statement issued by Council’s chief governing body reaffirms churches’ “solidarity with those working for peace with justice in Palestine and Israel”. The statement encourages churches to make responsible decisions regarding their investments which have an impact on the current situation in the region.
