ÖRK wirbt für Weltgebetstag für ein Ende des Hungers

Der Ökumenische Rat der Kirchen (ÖRK), die Weltweite Evangelische Allianz und die Gesamtafrikanische Kirchenkonferenz sowie kirchliche humanitäre Organisationen und eine Koalition kirchlicher Netzwerke und Organisationen werben dafür, in den Gemeinden weltweit den 10. Juni als zweiten jährlichen Weltgebetstag für ein Ende des Hungers zu begehen.

Friday evening when the leaders of the G20 states will be meeting in Hamburg and discussing global economic, social, environmental and political issues, the churches in Germany are inviting people in Germany and all over the world to a common peace prayer.

Über 100'000 Teilnehmende aus Deutschland und aller Welt werden zum Kirchentag erwartet. Unter den 2'500 Veranstaltungsangeboten im Kirchentagsprogramm finden sich zahlreiche Gelegenheiten, Vertreterinnen und Vertreter des ÖRK und seiner Mitgliedskirchen zu hören und zu treffen, darunter die Vorsitzende des ÖRK-Zentralausschusses Dr. Agnes Abuom, der ÖRK-Generalsekretär Pastor Dr. Olav Fykse Tveit, die ÖRK-Präsidentin für Afrika Pastorin Dr. Mary-Anne Plaatjies van Huffel, und weitere Mitglieder des ÖRK-Zentralausschusses.

The WCC at the Kirchentag

More than 100'000 participants are expected at the Kirchentag festival organized by a Protestant lay movement in Germany. Among the 2500 events on the Kirchentag programme, many involve representatives of the WCC member churches and its leadership, including the moderator of the WCC Central Committee, Dr Agnes Abuom; WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit; the WCC president for Africa, Rev. Dr Mary-Anne Plaatjies van Huffel; and various members of the WCC Central Committee.

Seven Weeks for Water 2017, week 2: "Feminization of water poverty in Africa", by Dr Agnes Abuom

The second of the seven reflections of the Lenten Campaign: Seven Weeks for Water 2017 of the Word Council of Churches’ (WCC) Ecumenical Water Network (EWN) is by Dr Agnes Abuom, moderator of the WCC’s Central Committee. 

Dr Abuom is the first woman and first African to hold this important position. She is also the Executive Director of TAABCO Research and Development Consultants, based in Nairobi, Kenya. In her reflection, being an African woman on the eve of International Women’s Day, she explores the linkages between poverty, water scarcity and its impact on women.  It is also contextual in that today Kenya is reeling under a serious drought which is deteriorating the situation for women as they are mostly responsible for fetching water for their families.

Seven weeks of Lent highlight water crisis in Africa

With a prayer service on Ash Wednesday in Sealite Mihret Orthodox cathedral in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the WCC's Ecumenical Water Network began its annual Lenten campaign “Seven Weeks for Water”. This year during Lent it will raise awareness of water justice issues in Africa.

Commission of the Churches on International Affairs sets its focus on Africa

The 54th meeting of the WCC Commission of the Churches on International Affairs (CCIA) began today in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, marking its yearly regional focus on Africa. During the meeting CCIA members are discussing the commission’s previous work and its outcomes focusing on Middle East, as well as setting strategic directions for activities until 2021.

ÖRK-Exekutivausschuss beschließt Pläne für das Jahr 2017

Vom 17. bis 23. November tagte der Exekutivausschuss des ÖRK zum allerersten Mal in China. Gastgeber des Besuches waren der Chinesische Christenrat und die Patriotische Drei-Selbst-Bewegung. Letztere ist eine protestantische Kirche in der Volksrepublik China und eines der größten protestantischen Gremien weltweit.

Plans for 2017 decided by WCC Executive Committee

On 17-23 November, the Executive Committee of the WCC met for the first time ever in China. The visit was hosted by the China Christian Council and the Three-Self Patriotic Movement. The Three-Self Patriotic Movement is a Protestant church in the People's Republic of China, as well as one of the largest Protestant bodies in the world.
