Day of Muslim-Christian dialogue unfolds in Egypt

The second meeting of a delegation of the Muslim Council of Elders led by the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, His Eminence Professor Dr Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, and a delegation of the World Council of Churches (WCC) led by Dr Agnes Abuom, Moderator of the Central Committee of the WCC and Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, general secretary, took place at Al Azhar, Cairo, Egypt, 26 April. Dr Al-Tayyeb opened the gathering by welcoming the World Council of Churches to this important meeting which was taking place at a critical time in the history of the Middle East and the world.

Während eines zweitägigen Dialogs zwischen dem Muslimischen Ältestenrat und dem ÖRK in Genf (Schweiz) ging es am 30. September und 1. Oktober um die Rolle der Religionen in der Friedensförderung und der Bekämpfung von Gewalt. Zwei Gesprächsrunden, bei denen der ÖRK als Gastgeber fungierte, umfassten Präsentationen und Diskussionen zu wesentlichen Aspekten der Friedensarbeit und des interreligiösen Dialogs mit besonderem Augenmerk auf der Bekämpfung eines religiösen Extremismus, der an vielen Orten der Welt zu Gewalt führt.

Christian, Muslim leaders agree to stand against religious extremism

The role of religions in promoting peace and countering violence was discussed during a two-day dialogue between the Muslim Council of Elders and the WCC in Geneva, Switzerland from 30 September to 1 October. Two sessions of talks, hosted by the WCC, involved presentations and discussions on key aspects of peacebuilding and interreligious dialogue, paying special attention to combating religious extremism leading to violence in many parts of the world.

Dialogue flourishes between WCC, Muslim Council of Elders

The Grand Imam of Cairo’s prestigious Al-Azhar mosque and university, Prof. Dr Ahmad al-Tayyeb, will visit the WCC to give a public lecture and participate in high-level dialogue on interreligious peacemaking. “We are honoured to welcome one of the world’s highest-ranking and most influential Muslim leaders to Geneva, and I very much look forward to his lecture and to sharing views with him on the many challenges that we as religious persons and leaders face together,” says WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit.

Condolences on the death of Tuikilakila Waqairatu

Rev. Tuikilakila Waqairatu, president of the Methodist Church in Fiji, who passed away on 11 February, was remembered by the WCC with a moment of “prayerful silence” at its WCC Executive Committee meeting currently underway in Switzerland.
