War in Ukraine, church dialogue, and humanitarian response were in sharp focus on third day of the World Council of Churches 11th Assembly. Church leaders from Ukraine together with heads of ecumenical organisations emphasised the need for reconciliation, unity, and peacebuilding.

Під час нещодавнього візиту солідарності в Україну делегація Всесвітньої ради церков (ВРЦ) зустрілася з представниками різноманітних державних установ, які займаються релігійними питаннями. Члени делегації вислухали розповіді жертв поточної війни і попросили підтримку в наданні дозволу членам делегації від українських церков виїхати за межі країни та взяти участь у 11-й Асамблеї ВРЦ у Карлсруе.

Всесвітня рада церков (ВРЦ) висловила солідарність свого світового співтовариства з народом України, зустрічаючись з церквами та державними установами під час візиту в Україну 1–5 серпня.

During the recent solidarity visit in Ukraine, a World Council of Churches (WCC) delegation has met with various state institutions working with religious issues, listening and learning from the victims of the ongoing war and asking for support in giving permission to the members of the delegation of Ukrainian Churches to leave the country and attend the WCC 11th Assembly in Karlsruhe. 

The World Council of Churches (WCC) expressed the solidarity of its worldwide fellowship with the people of Ukraine while meeting churches and state institutions during a visit to Ukraine from 1 – 5 August.

World Council of Churches acting general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca expressed great concern in the wake of a 7.3-magnitude earthquake that struck the northern part of Luzon Island in the Philippines on 27 July.

Засуджуючи незаконну та невиправдану війну, «розпочату проти народу та суверенної держави України», центральний комітет Всесвітньої ради церков (ВРЦ) висловлює глибокий жаль через «жахливе зростання кількості загиблих, руйнувань і переміщень, зруйновані стосунки та дедалі глибше вкорінення антагонізму між людьми, що живуть у реґіоні, розгоряння протистояння в усьому світі, підвищення ризику голоду в реґіонах світу з низькою продовольчою безпекою, економічні труднощі й посилення соціальної та політичної нестабільності в багатьох країнах».

Deploring the illegal and unjustifiable war “inflicted on the people and sovereign state of Ukraine” the World Council of Churches (WCC) central committee lamented “the awful and continuing toll of deaths, destruction and displacement, of destroyed relationships and ever more deeply entrenched antagonism between the people of the region, of escalating confrontation globally, of increased famine risk in food insecure regions of the world, of economic hardship and heightened social and political instability in many countries.”

In a public statement, the World Council of Churches executive committee reiterated the need for a ceasefire in Ukraine, and the need for addressing growing food insecurity worldwide.

On the International Day of Living Together in Peace declared by the United Nations, members of the World Council of Churches (WCC) fellowship from countries troubled by war and conflict gathered to pray for sustainable peace in the world.

The future of diaconal work in Central and Eastern Europe, particularly in the context of the war in Ukraine and aftermath of the war between Azerbaijan and Armenia, was discussed this week at the meeting organized by Interdiac, the International Academy for Diakonia and Social Action, Central and Eastern Europe in Český Těšín, Czech Republic.
