Thirty-seven church leaders from the United States, United Kingdom and Canada have called upon the US and British governments to use restraint in “the apparent drift towards military confrontation in Iraq”.

All four sites being proposed for the 9th Assembly of the World Council of Churches (WCC) in 2005 look good to most Central Committee members. So good that the proponent of one site suggests wryly that the Council choose all four of them.

The US-declared war on terrorism, still widely popular in the United States but subject to increasing scepticism elsewhere in the world, will be the focus of an international ecumenical meeting in Washington, D.C., 5-6 August.

The general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), Rev. Dr Konrad Raiser, has today written to the Most Rev. Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Wales, congratulating him on his appointment as the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury.
