From 4 to 9 December 2023, thousands of people convened in Harare, Zimbabwe, for the 22nd International Conference on Aids and STIs in Africa (ICASA). Scientists, medical experts, advocates, people living with HIV, and civil society organizations came together under the theme “AIDS IS NOT OVER: Address inequalities; accelerate inclusion and innovation.” Participants from many faith traditions were a meaningful part of many of these representative groups but also took up a space of their own.

The World Council of Churches (WCC), with the support of UNAIDS, hosted a webinar on World AIDS Day, 1 December, that launched two new tools aimed at invigorating HIV response by the faith sector.

As she spoke during a World AIDS Day event hosted by the World Health Organization and UNAIDS, Gracia Violeta Ross, programme executive for WCC Ecumenical HIV and AIDS Initiatives and Advocacy, called for honesty, equality, and inclusivity. 

A prayer and reflection on World AIDS Day, observed each year on 1 December, focused on the theme “Let Communities Lead!”

The World Council of Churches, with the support of UNAIDS, will host a webinar on World AIDS Day, 1 December, to launch two new tools aimed at invigorating HIV response by the faith sector.

The World Federation for Mental Health held a seminar, hosted by the World Council of Churches (WCC), that celebrated the 75th anniversary of both organizations, as well as the strong and dynamic partnership between them.

The World Council of Churches (WCC), with support from UNAIDS, hosted a webinar in Uganda and Nigeria on 14 November under the theme ““Changing Hearts and Minds” against HIV stigma.

A webinar on 4 December will focus on “Decolonizing beauty: mission, gender, racism, and health in the skin-whitening pandemic.”

On 17 November, the World Council of Churches (WCC) will host an event, “75 years of mental health advocacy: achievements, challenges, and the future.” 

Entitled "Changing Hearts and Minds: Uganda and Nigeria in the Fight Against HIV Stigma," the webinar is organized by the World Council of Churches (WCC). This online event, scheduled for 14 November from 15:00 to 17:00 CET, will bring together esteemed voices from both the faith communities and networks of people living with HIV.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) Commission of the Churches on Health and Healing held its inaugural online meeting on 20 October, where 23 of the 26 members participated. The newly-established commission will foster deeper engagement of WCC member churches in WCC's work on holistic health and healing. It will also assist the council in calling the attention of member churches and ecumenical partners to gaps and challenges on health and diaconal matters and suggest ways Christians may act effectively upon those issues in their respective communities. 

The World Council of Churches (WCC)—along with the World Health Organization, World Federation for Mental Health, World Psychiatric Association, and other partners—hosted a webinar on 11 October, the day after World Mental Health Day.

The WCC has launched two resources in collaboration with the UNAIDS Faith Partnership in the continued quest to support faith-based organizations and communities to respond to HIV.

To coincide with World Mental Health Day on 10 October, the World Council of Churches' (WCC) announces its 13th Global Ecumenical Health Network Meeting on 11 October. This year's theme stresses, "Mental health is a universal human right," spotlighting the vital role of faith communities in mental wellbeing.
