The meeting, moderated by Rt Rev. Philip Wright, Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Belize and WCC regional president for the Caribbean, also focused on reenergizing and revitalizing the regional ecumenical movement.
Wright reflected on how the Caribbean region, like any other region of the WCC member churches, has its own unique characteristics which to a large degree have impacted and continue to impact the understanding of ecumenism at the grassroots. “During this next eight-year cycle, as a region, we are seeking to be more intentional in engaging with all of the member churches in the region whilst balancing the bearings and challenges which are inherent on how ecumenism is understood and embodied in our region,” he said.
Rev. Dr Mikie Roberts, WCC programme executive for Spiritual Life, also reflected on the next eight years of work with the Caribbean region. “We are intentionally seeking to ensure that there is comprehensive and consistent engagement between the secretariat of the WCC and the member churches in the region,” he said. “The goal is not only to strengthen the global, regional, and local ecumenical links but also to reinvigorate the ecumenical ties in the region especially as we mark the 50th anniversary of the establishing of the regional ecumenical organization, the Caribbean Conference of Churches."
