WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia has been appointed chancellor of St. Paul's University, Limuru, Kenya. The board of trustees thereby expressed their appreciation for Kobia's position "within the ecumenical family in Kenya and beyond", as well as his "vast experience within the church" and contribution to the university.

Kobia's role within the Kenyan ecumenical family has also been acknowledged through the National Ecumenical Award bestowed upon him this summer. The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) established the award in 2006 to honour "individuals who have offered exceptional service, leadership and modelling" during their life and ministry.

St Paul's United Theological College, where Kobia himself received his first academic training in 1969, is now acquiring the status of a university and will receive its charter from the president of Kenya on 14 September 2007. The 100-year old institution is owned by the Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist and Reformed churches and the National Council of Churches.
