Green Village celebration underscores: “we contribute towards a sustainable planet”

Dykes and Nalwamba joined more than 300 construction workers, representatives from Implenia, Swiss Life, and the local community gathered for a reception and to reflect on how the development project contributes to a sustainable planet.

Dykes reflected on how the endeavor has, all along, reflected the WCC’s common voice for peace, justice, and reconciliation.

“The pilgrim sometimes has a long way to go; he may not be rich, in the sense of the world,” said Dykes. “But he will often have good traveling companions. Together they can go very far.”

“The WCC has worked together with Implenia to create the Green Village project, discussing values of sustainability during many meetings and dialogues over the years, and which are now finding expression in this project,” Dykes observed.

She also thanked the architects, engineers, and the whole construction team, noting: “From the search for local materials, the installation of photovoltaic panels, and the choice of trees for the park, you have remained faithful to the Green Village vision that we share,”

Nalwamba pronounced a blessing on the project, invoking the Triune God as the foundation of WCC faith and service commitments.

“Our faith and our common calling moved the WCC to initiate the Green Village project,” said Nalwamba. “It is in service to the world, because through it, we contribute towards a sustainable planet – our common home.”

The blessing also underscored the role of human beings as those God calls to be caretakers of, and to live in interdependent relationship with the rest of creation. “We are glad to have in you, partners with a shared vision for a sustainable planet,” Nalwamba added.

Other speakers from Implenia and Swiss Life joined in the celebration, reflecting on the work accomplished so far.
